Eh, it's not as simple as that. At least in the OT, God made it clear that although much of the world and its people were subject to determinism, the Jews still had to make the right choices, as hard to believe/understand as that might seem. That seems to be what's implied here: Pilate fulfills his role in destiny, but the Jews who betrayed Jesus and position themselves against him could've still done something differently.

Regardless, the OT has numerous cases of the odd effects of determinism and God's omniscience. See, for instance, all of Samuel (and, I suppose, Judges+Ruth) to see how God might position one person highly, knock them the fuck down, and replace them with his golden child (i.e. Saul gets fucked, David is the hero). Job poetically describes a lot of this, too.

If Christianity was based around the afterlife there would be no need for the resurrection, what you're describing is more of a naive reconstruction of Greco Paganism. There is very little reference to heaven in the Bible the Kingdom of God on Earth is far more of a central concern than anything concerning an afterlife.
