I read Swing Time over the summer, and plan on reading White Teeth eventually.

Swing Time wasn't poorly hashed out, nor was it absurd beyond readability, it was a solid novel about growing up as a lower-class mixed-race girl in London. Maybe it's because Smith has matured as a writer, but the identity politics didn't disrupt or corrupt the telling of the story, even though marginalization was the central theme. If I were looking for things to praise, it also spoke to the self-imposed isolation and abasement in the 21st century, in realistic terms. Is it a crowning achievement for Western Literature? No. But 99% of what I read wouldn't fit into that category. I'm happy enough to read a contemporary novel where the characters come alive, the plot is coherent, and it addresses something of the modern condition.

She's not like Dan Brown level airplane fodder, but obviously her fame/recognition is a result of the marketability of being black.

A lot of reviews of her novels I've read have indicated diminishing returns since 'White Teeth,' though to date I've only read NW and
Swing Time and enjoyed both: NW for its almost Eimear McBride-ish stream of consciousness (even though the more traditional Felix chapter shone the brightest, at least for me); and Swing Time many of the same reasons mentioned.

She's intimated that Americans can't understand Kafka, so there's that. Meanwhile she's decried the Beats, and I want to tell her that's because she can't understand them/they're not for her.

She's an idiot with an inflated impression of grandeur, her husband is a moderately successful novelist from N.Ireland, she made some commentary on the place last year and it was so basically wrong it was embarrassing
