I'm no expert on Ginsberg's life, but it seems to me that he was just trying to cross as many boundaries as he could, saying he was a buddhist, a communist, a pedophile but really half-assed all those things, preferring to just identify as one rather than REALLY being one.

Again, I don't know, he did visit my college often and my older professors seemed to like him. They're more willing to call out Chögyam Trungpa for perversion before they do Ginsberg.

Then we have Deliberate Prose: Selected Essays 1952-1995, a book in which his publisher (HarperCollins) claims Ginsberg "gave voice to the moral conscience of the nation." A book in which the poet's "moral conscience" led him to announce: “Prepubescent boys and girls don’t have to be protected from big hairy you and me, they’ll get used to our lovemaking in two days provided the controlling adults will stop making those hysterical noises that make everything sexy sound like rape.”

I'm not certain how reliable Dworkin's account is, especially since it's pretty convenient for her that Ginbserg to say all these things that would support her psuedoscientific ideas about pornography causing rape

i think a lot of the boomers that made the Beats' reputations have a blindspot about this stuff in their memories. The topic of child sexuality was far from sorted and set in stone in his day. I do empathize with those who question it because it tends to fit into what D. H. Lawrence called "the dirty little secret": a culture in which sex in-itself is something bad, but in which pornography and obscenity sure go well with this notion and feed off of transgression. At the same time I feel like Ayn Rand's condemnation of adultery, that it gives sex too much [isolated] importance, resonates with this. I forgot which comedian, maybe Louis C.K., said that if so many celebrities are accused of paedophilia maybe it must feel incredibly good.

It seems to me that Lacan's analysis of Kant and Sade, that Sade was doing what he perceived to be his kantian duty to enjoy (making sadism a philosophy, not just a secret enjoyment) is what is at stake here. How do we avoid condemning sex and "protecting the innocent children" from this bad thing while at the same time not making them nothing but sex objects?

Sexuality, as something that connects to everything else (like everything in this world) is missed here because of its own practice: it goes through fantasy (the imagined sex object and/or sex act) to find its flow, but as desire it considers the object above the flow in terms of desire (at least in Ginsberg's case, as far as I can tell). Of course this gets way more complicated if we ask whether telling a paedophile to have "normal" non-child sex is the same as telling a gay person to have heterosexual sex (moral considerations aside).
