Hemingway

Just read my first Hemingway. Why is it that Veeky Forums looks down on writers like Orwell for being entry level and "high school reading list -tier", but idolize Hemingway despite him being entirely as accessible as Orwell, if not more?
Anyway, my favorite passage was that of Cohn being compared to a steer. Degrading man to that of what is in essence a cuckold is timeless. Masculinity is inherent even outside of social measures and this novel depicts it so well - it applies even in today's climate where many will denounce masculinity simply to fit in with the current zeitgeist.
The most memorable element was that of the telegram: Jake is constantly in contact with people across the globe, which is entirely reminiscent of the internet and other technologies today. Society as a whole has devolved despite being technologically advanced.

That photo is so fucking gay
>hemingwayfag
Ah ok

Well, first of all, Veeky Forums does not idolize Hemingway in any noticeable way. Second of all, there's more to literature than page length, which is the only relevant connection I could make to explain why you are under the impression that Orwell and Hemingway are similar writers.

>baseless fallacy
>can't address the topic at hand
Why even reply? At least elaborate on what exactly makes Hemingway "fag".

>which is the only relevant connection I could make
Accessibility seems to be looked down on on this board. Many read Orwell in high school, and I've seen use this to discredit his work. In terms of the comparison, The Sun Also Rises has simply prose, making it accessible. That is the sole basis for my comparison. But I've seen Orwell discredited many times on this board, while also having seen a few threads discussing Hemingway in earnest.

Hemingway’s writing is simple but the subtext runs deep. Orwell’s is babby tier and stays babby tier.

This is pretty much correct. Orwell was a pleb who wrote for political reasons, while Hemingway wrote because he felt like he had to.

Because, and I shit you not, Hemingway had a small penis. Something in the neighborhood of three inches. It's well documented. Hemingway's insecurities bled out into his work. His machismo is insincere, to some this is immediately obvious, others are aware only on a subconscious level, but we all know. We love Hemingway because we love ourselves. We have to, no one else will. We all have small penises here, user.

Should have started with for whom the bell tolls

He actually had no benis DDDDDDD:

Veeky Forums does not idolize hemmingway, lurk more. also, lit hates orwell because 3/4 posters here only read animal farm / 1984 and think he's the essential high school writer. when in fact his best books are keep the aspidastra flying and homage to catalonia, which almost no one has read

You're a fag because you had to show everyone your starting strength forearms to internet strangers when you could have, you know, taken a pic of the book. Or used a picture of the book from online because it doesnt fucking matter. Thats why you're a fag. Hemingway is a fag because he had a reddit tier idea of being a le epic gentleman le badass which is impressive given that it was 70 years before reddit existed. He had a tiny dick, was a retarded miserable character and even bragged about committing a war crime in Spain. What makes it more pathetic is that it didn't even happen.

>"One time I killed a very snotty SS kraut who, when I told him I would kill him unless he revealed what his escape route signs were said: You will not kill me, the kraut stated. Because you are afraid to and because you are a race of mongrel degenerates. Besides it is against the Geneva Convention. What a mistake you made, brother, I told him and shot him three times in the belly fast and then, when he went down on his knees, shot him on the topisde so his brains came out of his mouth or I guess it was his nose.
>The next SS I interrogated talked wonderfully."
Yeah and then the whole Republican army clapped you fucking faggot. Hemingway wrote a fucking fantasy about a war crime. His entire life's work was an expression of being a powerless weedy fuck and his latter day fanboys are no exception. Shooting himself was the only he ever did that wasn't a waste

Hemingway is overrated and Orwell is underrated.

People usually sont go around screaming that it’s the epitome of political critique like they do with Orwell.
>It wasn’t supposed to be an instruction manual
>I’m so well read I’ve read 1984
Don’t get me wrong, nineteen-eighty four is a great book, but people shouldn’t put it on that high of an altar.

this

>but idolize Hemingway
The fuck are you on about LITTLE boy?

Post your feet OP.

>Orwell is underrated
1984's normie meme status has ruined him, even if Homage to Catalonia and Wigam Pier were good

Beautiful work, thoroughly dispatched

My favourite part is the suggestion that Cohn's nose looked better after it was broken.

Also, that photo, you're either a quality shit stirer or a complete doofus.

Hemingway is a damned good writer, but I hate how his legacy lives. I hate how my professors always ask for Hemingway-esque prose.

His best book is easily Burmese Days.

>Many read Orwell in high school, and I've seen use this to discredit his work
Anyone who says that is memeing or an actual idiot. It's hardly worth arguing with either.

It is interesting how Hemingway's writing has become the model for pretty much any tuition or advice on how to write. Maybe it's because badly-written sparse prose is a lot less painful to read than badly-written verbose prose.

That's exactly it. It's harder to mess up

Hemingway's prose is fine if you're not looking to become a writer. My friends in STEM write like this, and it works well for them.

It's a little pathetic when your creative writing professor teaching a 500-level course asks for prose like this, though.

>Hemingway is accessible
>posts terrible reading
>prolly can’t understand Hemingway

Unironically iceberg theory, mate. Hemingway is popular because his works seem accessible to almost everyone, while the few who take the time can appreciate a “larger” meaning. Then there’s you: you’re just retarded.

Lel your vascularity es entry level

Hemingway is a joke and a writer for readers who dislike creative thinking.

Read this earlier this year

Thought it kinda sucked. Not sure why everybody wanted that bitches panties so bad when she was obviously a thot

>other people liking something has ruined it for me

Do you also hate Star Wars now?

If that actually happened, I respect the man way more now.

Yes because it's awful and popular you could not have picked a worse example

t. Soycialist nu-male

>You're a fag because you had to show everyone your starting strength forearms to internet strangers
It's completely benign, you could have just as easily ignored it.
>Hemingway is a fag because he had a reddit tier idea of being a le epic gentleman le badass
Why are you so against the inherent nature of a man's masculinity? Hemingway spoke honestly, and his ideas were more so observations and statements of truth.
>His entire life's work was an expression of being a powerless weedy fuck
You're just regurgitating what they teach you in school. Because when they teach Hemingway, and really any work that deals with the topic of masculinity, they must also shame the man behind them, to disrobe the supposedly toxic character for the insecure wretch they want you to believe he was. Just like you do with "tiny dick". "Pride? For what? Inherent nature? Obsolete! Testosterone? No, estrogen! Now lets learn about the MEN behind the WAR CRIMES", is what they want you to believe. It's an agenda, and you've clearly been brainwashed to take a stance against the ever-growing boogyman that is masculinity.
That you get stuck up on an arm in OP, and can only take a stance against Hemingway's ideals of self, is telltale of your own insecurity. You'll never be a man, which is why you hate men so.

Hemingway wasn't masculine, he was reverse effeminate which is actually even less masculine than being womanly
He was a prototype for the instagram manwhore

your opinions are garbage and you are garbage. lurk more, try hard pseud

>reverse effeminate
So not effeminate? And shooting yourself in the face is statistically a masculine method. The opposite would be failing to OD on pills multiple times. Women are too scared to harm their features, and have no actual conviction in taking their life, which is why their attempts are so much higher than men.
>prototype for the instagram manwhore
I don't know what this means, I don't use social media. Surely it doesn't pertain to this thread, so why bring it up?

So Hemingway had a micropenis, borderline personality disorder (an illness commonly diagnosed in women), and an obsession with public image.
Truly a paragon of masculinity. A real man's man.

lel that kraut definitely had it coming

>So not effeminate?

Nope, it makes it even more effeminate. A proper masculine subject never considers the notion of his own gender. Its like kids in a toystore, a normal boy just goes and grabs whatever the fuck he wants. Then girls are told they're little princesses so they get the Barbies or whatever.
Someone like Hemingway though instead of just being a normal male fixates on whether what he is doing is not girly but in effect he becomes even more consumed by gender than girls themselves.
In short he's a massive faggot and is everything wrong with effeminacy

>you've clearly been brainwashed to take a stance against the ever-growing boogyman that is masculinity.
I'm not a shitlib idiot
>You'll never be a man, which is why you hate men so.
Yeah you're right I should buy a $300 shaving kit and a pair of leather chukka shoes. Every Hemingway fag is just the male equivalent of a daddy issues bitch. I'm going to clue you in on something. *Real men don't obsess over being a man. They are.*

This faggy mid-century cargo cult of BeingManlyTM is a sad fake, shallow, consumerist ploy to take advantage of bored middle class twerps who are making up for never playing football in high school. Enjoy your bacon beard grease silly poser

>poser
We in middle school now brehs

t. Poser

Not him but you're cutting me deep breh

I want to make up for my past mistakes. Am I forever doomed for the failings of my youth?

You can definitely remake yourself. Hemingway faggotry aside I absolutely feel the void left from when men had a role in the world, an identity etc. Thats what makes this Art of Manliness shit so sad because its just taking the trappings of their grandpas younger days and awkwardly superimposing it on themselves. Wearing fucking suspenders won't make you a man. Reading Hemingway won't make you a man. We're all gonna make it but there is nothing you can buy or read that will get you there. You're gonna have to *be* not own or worse defensively posture as OP has. What that entails I don't really know but I'm figuring it out same as you.

>discussing Hemingway in earnest
3/10

Anyway, if you're talking Hemingway and going for the novels and not the short stories, I don't know what to tell you. You fucked up.

The Short and Happy Life of Francis Macomber is a better study in masculinity than The Sun Also Rises. TSAR is for edgy faggot teenagers who feel misunderstood, and I'm saying that as someone who still likes that book. The value in TSAR is Ashley and Barnes full stop.

It was Scott that had the small penis. Hemmy had erectile dysfunction that later worked itself out on its own, but made him insecure about his manhood for years to come.

Post your feet already OP

>what is Plato

I will disagree

The lost generation aspect, at the time directly relating to the war and the more enduring implications on a modern society i find very relatable

These guys are all smart enough and capable but are spending their days sinking piss and being idiot's. The fucking around, combined with the masculinity I find paints a nice picture and theme for the whole book, something quite commendable

Are you the same manlet who defends Godard on /tv/? That would explain your shit opinions in bith literature and film

He may have had ED, but several lovers confirmed that the peeny was teeny. He was apparently still a skilled lover though. Just goes to show how important it is to have a silver tongue :P

>makes it mor
op btfo

t. Griffithfag

I wish.

You just come across similiar to a certain poster who always defends Godard and recently he posted a pic of his arm, similiar to yours while avoiding questions about his height from everyone. Same MO basically

Sorry, didn't mean to mislead you but I'm not OP. I wish OP would post more of his (potentially) cute body though............

Everyone has flaws. And even if true, why do you think this makes his characters inauthentic?
>A proper masculine subject never considers the notion of his own gender
This claim can be contested by the reality of biology. Masculinity is an inherent concept and as such exists to be pondered like, say, hunger. It's directly tied to sexuality and is why people at a young age suddenly one day become aware of their genitalia. Your analogy fails, because as you prop up a child as "proper masculine subject", you falsely imply that he wouldn't also be susceptible to influence; all children are, regardless of gender. But that doesn't somehow make them effeminate from the get go. In fact, as they grow into adults and take up gender roles and "fixate", they become men (and women).
>instead of just being a normal male fixates on whether what he is doing is not girly but in effect he becomes even more consumed by gender than girls themselves
This only makes one more masculine. Fixation gives to ideals, and so one without fixation is one without ideals, and so in such case a man's masculinity devolves as modern society squeezes you into a block of pure estrogen. At that point biology doesn't matter, because one will never contest emasculation. Were Hemingway still here today, he would be a survivor, if not in life than in death, while someone like yourself would ignore notions of "gender" and self until it were too late. You sound repulsed by masculinity, which is undoubtedly why you refuse to consider it and instead convince yourself doing so is effeminate somehow.

>you're right I should buy a $300 shaving kit and a pair of leather chukka shoes
>This faggy mid-century cargo cult of BeingManlyTM is a sad fake, shallow, consumerist ploy to take advantage of bored middle class twerps who are making up for never playing football in high school
Where did you pull this completely conjured up strawman from? What does the site Reddit have to do with anything? You don't even know what masculinity is, and you're attacking a ghost in Hemingway.
>Real men don't obsess over being a man. They are.
Let me tell you something about obsession and "being" that you'll never understand: when I first read Infinite Jest, I did as I read, and squeezed a tennis ball day in and day out. In no time at all, it crumpled in upon itself. Did I call it quits, did I have enough yet? Absolutely not. I bought buckets of used tennis balls, and broke them all, squeezing every waking minute of the day. I obsessed, I fostered masculinity, and then I became. I never lifted a weight in my life - it's all thanks to reading DFW and squeezing tennis balls. But you? You've never squeezed anything in you life. You don't have it in you, because you're already content that you "are". And you're so wrong it's sick.

unironically this

People will read something like the Old Man and The Sea and see no problems with Hemingway writing himself into the old man who, a paragraph later, is referred to in Christ-like metaphor or a figure of pious humility
Bloom said it best when he described there being no bigger fan of Hemingway than Hemingway himself.

kek! hilarious

hahaha, well done. you have beautifully btfo of that user

You're posting pictures of yourself to strangers online and then you reply to your own comment twice Nobody gives a fuck how many balls you squeeze. Please stop I'm getting second hand embarrassment on behalf of your estranged father

not even him, but simmer down babes

THIS ASSRAVAGE

Did you have to take the photo in such a tryhard way

This post made me laugh out loud in the middle of the office.

It's beautiful.

>more of the picture is taken up by his flexing forearm and balled-up fist awkwardly positioned to show off a bulging vein than the book itself for no reason
If I was trying to parody people like this I wouldn't be able to do it as well as they do it themselves

this

this is a work of art

How teeny we talking? What lovers? Gimme a source dammit.

I actually kind of believe you.

I’ve always felt The Sun Also Rises was 90% fact with details and names changed, rather than loosely inspired by real people.

I could see how Jake’s “war wound” is actually just Hem living with having a tiny peener (which must’ve been tough because he was a genuinely attractive young man in all the easily observable ways)

Do you have a source?

>Good

Slave perspective of ethics detected in thread

The steer is actually mirroring Jake Barne's own predicament bub

ITT: Faggots

That being said, I think what you're asking is why is Orwell more popular than Hemingway. Because his conceptualization (imagery, symbolism, metaphor, etc) captured the imagination because of the comical-like fear it induced. Hemingway didn't write about his meaning in terms of dystopian turret-equiped nefarious government pyramid buildings, he wrote in a realistic, modernist sensibility. His turrets were the grim, quick sense of an air raid in a briskly described Spanish mountains.

Should Hemingway be as popular as Orwell? Yeah, it's make the public conversation more interesting and perhaps useful for revolutionary movements like the anarchist ones described by Orwell in Homage (which follows his comical-like thematicism, btw)

I think both had a deeper sense of personal-inspired possibility. Both goading the reader to question their own perspective and initiative.

Ehhh, I think forms of masculinity still exist, personally I think a virtuous ethical anarchist-sensibility is the best...yeah.

There's something about For Whom The Bell Tolls, the environmental imagery and his writing style give this winter space, if you will, that is just perfect. A grey environment that accents grey writing. The excitement of the republican war juxtapositions against the enviroment and writing to create a particular atmospheric feeling, for lack of a better word.

>inb4 Veeky Forums trolling

>source?
Not off hand, no. So you'd be perfectly justified in calling me a sourceless faggot.
My info comes from an academic adviser that was big into Hemingway and combed through a bunch Hemingway related stuff.
Not the original penis poster, so I don't know where his info comes from, but I've been led to believe it was pretty small.
Apparently he was so self conscious about his "shortcomings" *snicker* that he made an effort to up his game in the sack so his lady friends could finish.
Right manly thing to do in my opinion, but probably not something you'd want to admit to in public.

There is nothing wrong with Hemingway but OP is undeniably a huge narcissistic fag

Do you know which sexual partners said this? One of his ex-wives? Google brings me nothing.

not who you replied to but I like you user. You're brutally honest and don't hide that behind a facade of hip, cynical and arrogant confidence that permeates this awful website. I empathize with you in cringing at the desperation people exhibit to use cultural memes of "manliness" to feel good about themselves.

Have you figured out what it means to be a man? What manliness is to you? I ask because I'm well past my teenage years and already in early 20s and still am unsure if I've acquired the traits I subconsciously associate with grown men and not conflicted, fearful boys. I personally feel that pop culture's depiction of manliness is cringeworthy (how you described).

The closest I've come to a coherent and acceptable notion of manliness is somewhat like stoicism. To struggle against life and demonstrate mental and physical strength when necessary; in adversity and in times of self actualization. Which is why I feel that if you're reasonably rich and live a hedonist decadent lifestyle you're less likely to encounter and significantly taxing struggle which leads to poser faggots like OP. To overcome adversity, demonstrate strength and have the power to get what one wants seem to me the traits that somehow define masculinity. But then again, most men I know who aren't totally oblivious normie faggots (friends, peers etc) deal with adversity through misguided ideals or fall victim to depression or shallow vices which makes me question exactly what masculinity means in general modern life.

Dude you're painfully transparent. Everybody can see through your charade. It's boring and annoying not because "I hate men", but because it's trite and you can smell the insecurity from a mile away.

Well said, Hemingway was a tryhard.
As for OP, take a good hard look at yourself and try to find a way to get over your absent father figure that doesn't involve shoving your insecurities down our throat.

lmao saved that pic even without context it btfo hemingway fags

>I just CAN'T like his two most popular books!

Mr. Right-Bicep Troll, call daddy.
