Have you read "The Depressed Person?" He had an uncomfortably detailed experience of depression. He did a brilliant interview with Charlie Rose, it's on YouTube, in which he says all his characters are more or less him.

He's the typical post-modernist author that's been conscripted, like many before him, to perpetuate the values put out by every major publisher today, which serve to deconstruct the morals of the reader and the medium itself rather than uplift and celebrate it.
