Ghastly rigmarole

I think 99% of people who read it are caught up in Dostoevsky's psychological pretext and ignore that the text is openly political, preferring the existential elements heavily in favor of the satirical jabs against humanitarian socialism and societal nihilism, particularly the direct satire of symbolism in Chernyshevsky's "What Is to Be Done?"

I also find the text to be stiflingly modern, though that can in no way have been due to Dostoevsky's own foresight into early 21st Century politics.

would you mind expand on the political aspect? i think i’m one of those who missed it

I get it mixed up with my diary sometimes desu

I didn’t read it

It's interesting. The 2nd half is hilarious.

It saved me from becoming an edgy, whiny "nice guy" when I was in my late teens. I realized that I was to blame for a lot things I complained about, and that if I didn't make an effort to be positive I'd end up like this guy, in a hole somewhere with no friends.

So yeah, I really liked it.

literally me, just like White Nights and Ridiculous Man

Other user here: the position of the underground man was very much a 'political position'. Alot of what the underground man says and does goes against a form of political optimism of the time, 'proving them wrong' and ridiculing some 19th century views of mankind/society.
I don't know if you remember all the parts he spoke about the 'glass-palace' and rationality, but those were almost pure politics. If you're not familiar with 19th century views on politics, especially the relationship Russia had with more 'Western' ideas, it can be really helpfull to read some annotations on Notes. It's not that complicated, but adds another dimension to the novel and allows you to from a more correct image of the historical novel, instead of the ''R9K: The Book" image Veeky Forums often gives it.

One of a handful of books I've abandoned. And I'm a bloodyminded bastard who usually insists on finishing everything.

quite small book

Dostoyevsky shattered the most of my illusions. Having been defeated on all fronts but the intellectual one, I desperately clinged on to the idea that I am a gifted, complex individual in order to establish a (false) identity. After reading the Notes I realized that I am a cardboard cutout, a meager mediocrity whose psychological profile can fit into a hundred pages. Surprisingly enough, I have been a lot more relieved after getting to know myself better. No more illusions and false expectations, I am not extraordinarily gifted for sport, music, literature or anything else really. A mediocrity, a jack of not all but a few trades and a master of none, that is who I am. And in spite of being fully aware of the curse of not being a unique, talented person I firmly believe that, knowimg my boundaries, I am one step closer to living a content life.

P.S. Please excuse my poor English

Good book but it's very obvious that Dosto wasn't still fully formed as a writer

^^^^this^^^^^

it destroyed my cheap ego but in a positive way, i was better than ever after laughing at myself

I got all of that from Notes except I’m one step away from a content life.

he'll never be my boyfriend and ill never chase him forcibly hug him while he deconstructs me, hating me

Notes From Underground made me even more delusional
Bunch of unintelligent men of action itt claiming it changed their lives

Watch Taxi Driver then they have a lot in common

Also read My Twisted World. These will make you hella redpilled.

read nietchze aswell

I wrote an analysis of Notes from the underground & Taxi Driver (through both Dostoevsky and Nietzsche), here there are my sources, the books are in italian but I think you can find the English versions easily. Berdajev and Girard were the most interesting and the YouTube videos were too (even though I didn't really the latters to write the analysis).
The Columbine shooters' diaries were also interesting and I used them too even though they aren't listed.

It describes my life, or at least my past life.

I'm reading it right now actually
Just finished the first part and starting the second today

it feels like i'm reading about myself ;_;

linka il tuo file per favore

You just gave up.

The second half gave me a good chuckle like when he paces up and down the room for hours because he is so autistic that he cannot do anything else

I love the structure of having part 1 be entirely monologue to get to know the character intimately before we see him interact with the outside world. The book is kinda simple and complex at once. It's short but worth reading over and over. Awesome book

Too short
I wish the Underground Man had a blog so I could read his daily shitposts

Original responder here, this user has it right. I recommend actually reading the introduction of the P&V translation (the one in OP's picture) even if you despise the translation because it frames the piece much more accurately.
A basic knowledge of the Russian political sphere in Dostoevsky's time is also necessary.
