Books like Death Note

I just finished watching the best anime of all time (sorry Saint Seya) and now I feel the need to read something similar.
Know any lit like death note?
Have you read the mangas?
How was it like?
Good or bad?

Crime and Punishment
Infinite Jest

Watch more anime lol.

Shurato
Pokemon
All yugiohs
Almost all digimon
Saint seya
Read berserker
Sakura card captors
Monster Ranch
HELLSing
Rurouni Kenshi
All dragon Ball
Crayo Shin Shan
And much more
You?

Sorry infiniye jest is a meme, but I can see tjhe similarities betqeen Kira and Raskolnikov. Thw writer must have read Dosto. The religious simbology is also strong on Deatj noye

>Death Note
>Saint Seiya
>anywhere near the best anime of all time
That said, if you like Death Note, you'll most likely like the works of Gaiman. Neverwhere is particularly good, despite being the novelization of a shit TV show.

Gaiman's shit is pulp, don't get me wrong, but so is Death Note

>Rurouni Kenshin
>Monster Rancher
These are legit good though

That's a pathetic list, dude. Death Note is a 7/10 at best and anyone who thinks it's unironically goat simply hasn't seen enough 'classics' or anime in general.

Ive read a few Sandman comic books, didn't like it much. Redpill me on the patrician animes?

Give me some 9/10 or 10/10 animes then, fellow. I strongly doubt that they are pathethic, some of them are very well-known. I have also seen Naruto and One Piece and beyblade but did not like it

Edgy brazilian cunt mad he can't get a girlfriend, you people are so pathetic you can't even branch out beyond the most basic anime there is (I don't watch anime and have seen most of the series you listed just by being a kid in the 90s), drop literature altogether and go work some call center, the only thing you're capable of.

I have an absolutely massive list. Probably 200+ You're like a little baby.

Ohba and Obata (the Mangaka behind Death Note) certainly did not read Dosto, or if they did it had no bearing on their story. They've laid their creative process, and the process behind most Manga creation, pretty bare in another phenomenal work of theirs, Bakuman. which is basically a fictionalized documentary of how they and a lot of others ended up working at Jump.

The Christian Imagery in Death Note is only there because of its aesthetic value and the fascination with monotheistic culture in historically polytheistic asia - in other words, 'because its cool'. If you want books that elicit a similar feeling to Death Note, you want narrative fiction with an emphasis on aesthetic form and character study.
I'd recommend Grendel, but it lacks the mystery elements and focuses on a single character rather than two foils.

Unironically, go watch Devilman Crybaby

unironically the count of monte christo except he wins

Literally follow this list first before making authoritative judgements on anime. Ignore the ironic title.

>work some call center
Unironically worked for a call center for 8 months lol
I see. But the similarities between Rasko and Kira (light) are uncanny
So this is the patrician anime?

I have seen Lain, great anime
It was a long time ago, so I forgot to add to my list. I will check the others.thanks
If there is a similar list for j movies, please send.

>crime and punishment
This. Book is full of mind games, similar to light v L

Also, disclaimer, avoid /a/ until you've seen everything. They hate casuals and would utterly destroy you.

The new lupin shows are good too.
The Woman Called Fujiko Mine and The Blood Spray of Goemon Ishikawa, and I'm sure there's one for Lupin and Jigen too.
Seems like gory revamps of 60s anime is the hot new thing. Not that I'm complaining, mind.

You don't even need to watch the classics to watch some of the best anime of all time.

I watch most shows every season. Have for about a decade, and I've watched every important thing that came before too. But Sangatsu no Lion, which is airing right now, is strongly my pick for second best anime of all time, behind Kemonozume. It somehow reminds me of Bolaño, but everything about Bolaño that feels cheap and that diminishes the apparent quality of his works is missing from Umino Chika. And even then, Honey and Clover is nowhere near the top 10 even if it's pretty damn good too.

Again, Sangatsu no Lion.

Let's see what I'd recommend that aired in 2017...
Winter 16/17:
- First and foremost, Sangatsu no Lion
- Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju
- Little Witch Academia (if overrated)
- Acca-13
- Onihei
- Konosuba is actually a fantastic comedy. Read the novels too.

Spring:
- First and foremost, Uchoten Kazoku
- ID-0
- Warau Salesman
- Natsume Yuujinchou
- Sekaisuru Kado
- Unironically Nobunaga no Shinobi.
- I actually liked Kabukibu a lot too.

Summer:
- Of course, Made in Abyss
- Ballroom e Youkouso
- Kakegurui
- Hell Girl
- Aho Girl is also a top comedy.
- Isekai Shokudou
- Princess Principal
- Knights and Magic is pure /m/ fanservice, but there's something about it...

Fall:
- Sangatsu s2 takes 1st place again.
- Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryokou
- Mahotsukai no Yome
- Kino no Tabi
- Konohana Kitan is actually fantastic if you're into shinto. Hoozuki no Reitetsu too.
- Imouto Sae Ireba Ii :^) No, but seriously, it's pure living the literary life.

Winter 17/18:
- Kokkoku
- I usually hate Kyoani, but Violet Evergarden episode 1 was damn good
- Devilman Crybaby
- Ito Junji Collection
- Card Captor Sakura

Something like that.

Ok. Thanks for the advice. I tend to restrict my Veeky Forums use to Veeky Forums. All the other boards seem to have a poorer taste for everything.

Half of those shows really fucking suck tbqhwyf.
And the only good thing that came out of fall imo was Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryokou.

will take note, thanks, user

I also enjoyed Garden of words alot.Has anyone ever seen it?
Know anything similar? It reminded me of some coming of age stories and the dreamy atmosphere had a little resemblance with White Nights

Did you really watch Mahotsukai no Yome and Kino no Tabi? I understand how Konohana Kitan wouldn't be your cup of tea if you're not into shinto (or moe), but if you've read the Kojiki and the Nihon Shoki (I can give you a link if you want), you'll be forced to enjoy it.

>no monogatari anywhere
"Okay"

Mahotsukai was decent, actually. Kino was a big disappointment and trash compared to the 2003 anime.

The Rurouni Kenishin prequel OVA is better than the series though

Zaregoto > Monogatari.

Volume 2 rereleased in february. Volume 3 fucking when?

That said, I've read the fan translations, and it goes to shit from volume 3 on. Or, I mean, it's still good in a way, but 1 and 2 are beautifully crafted mysteries, while 3 on, while still keeping the mystery thing going on, introduced action stuff, and it's just not the same.

>compared to the 2003 anime
Here's your problem.

It's a decent adaptation of a nice book series. It's not as stellar as the previous adaptation, sure, but it's still a decent one.

Has anyone ever seen garden of words?

It is one of my fav anime-movies of all time. I even rec it to my friends who hate animes and make fun of me fun liking it

Makoto Shinkai a shit. But if you liked Garden of Words, go watch his other movies.

Now, if you want good movies, go watch Satoshi Kon's. Sorely missed. By the way, his Paprika (which was an adaptation of Tsutsui Yasutaka's novel) was plagiarized by Inception, and his Perfect Blue was plagiarized by Black Swan.

>Perfect Blue was plagiarized by Black Swan
I watched and enjoyed both

Do you really think Garden of words is shit? Why is that?

>Do you really think Garden of words is shit? Why is that?
Due to Shinkai's usual melodramatic semiromance with very pretty backgrounds.

If you want the greatest love story ever told, go watch Kemonozume. Though do expect some whacky shit, way beyond the animation. And if you don't mind reading porn, go read Takemura Sessyu's Take on Me (the 2 volumes, not only the 1st one that was officially translated). /a/ likes to meme Toradora into the greatest love story ever told, but that's just because they're cucks.

Ah, and Kimi to Boku. That one is a really, really good romance show too, even if it starts very slow, and overall has a very slow pace.

Satoshi Kon is legit GOAT.
I felt that some of the Inception scenes were noda, but the theme and especially the elevator thing is just straight up stolen.

The breaking glass scene was pretty much frame-by-frame plagiarized.

If you like death note you'll like Code Geass

>Due to Shinkai's usual melodramatic semiromance with very pretty backgrounds.
Well some scenes were excessive but I think it was well developed. The track was also excellent.I imagine that if all his movies are like that it can be bad, but since it was the only one Ive seen...

>mind reading porno
Thanks, but I am really trying to het away from it.

Thanks for the recs, I will be checking them in a few hours

yeah, I cried like a baby. what's your point?

I always thought that was a nod.
I was always more offended by the elevator-premise, which no one seems to have complained about.

Ohba most likely read Ningen Shikkaku, and Dazai was very much so inspired by C&P, so if Ohba didn't directly read Dosto, he at least got a strong second-hand influence.

Go watch psycho pass to realize how utterly shit death note was, and then go read whatever book references that urobuchi pseud name drops in the show, he does have some good taste

Interesting thread, go on

Possibly, and Light may be a loose translation of Raskolnikov, but that's really where the similarities end.

Urobutcher is the king of transitory shock value, and his best work was outdone by Netflix's Devilman.

All of you need to kys

>All of you need to kys
>kys
Let me correct:All of you need to kiss

You sound like a little kid who finally watched his 10th anime. LOGH, Monster, Texhnolyze, NGE, NHK, even HxH or Devilman are better than it

>mangas
You can't even weeb properly.

acca 13 was not good, i was so incredibly dissapointed.

No worries, we talk about the better part of books because we don't read them
