I haven't read it, but Mount Analogue: A Novel of Symbolically Authentic Non-Euclidean Adventures in Mountain Climbing might be a horse of the right color.

Yep that's The Apartment with Jack Lemon, Shirley MacLaine and Fred MacMurray.
Great movie...full of awesome details about life in 1960.
I lived in that world, and it sort of amazes me how different it is now...everything I thought was solid, real, permanent has shifted, changed, or disappeared.

Assuming you're actually an old person, you should read this article. thebaffler.com
It's about why none of the things we expected to have in the future back in the 60s came true. Things like flying cars and colonies on Mars.

We got computers. And computers are actuallly very very awesome. And strangely enough nobody saw that one coming, at least not as a consumer good.
I remember watching some TV show, maybe cartoons as a child back in 64 or so, and just wishing I could interact and play with Heckle and Jeckle etc through the TV. I tried to imagine it but it seemed utterly impossible.
Now I play Arma 3 and Black Shark 2 and Atilla Total War, and I'm like this 10 year old boy that finally got to have all the toys I wished for the in the department store Christmas Catalogue.
