pleb tier opinion desu

Solid choice, his work on To Pimp a Butterfly leans towards the very poetic
>inb4 someone memes on me with some cherrypicked lines in all caps
Very nice taste in conscious leaning hip hop
two of the greatest to ever do it, excellent choices. My one qualm is that Rakim tends to have a pretty limited range in style and content, especially when compared with the other MC in your post.
Severely underrated lyricist, one of my personal favorites, just wish he wasn't such a shit
This.
Absolutely top tier sci-fi rap, for the more bizarre side of it, check out Dr.Octogonecologyst by Dr. Octagon (Kool Keith)

Nas, GZA, MF DOOM, Andre 3000,

Big K.R.I.T. really shines on 4eva is a Mighty Long Time.

That Lil Wayne mention is too true. I've never seen another artist of any genre oscillate so quickly from incredibly clever lines and wordplay to incredibly dumb lines that live up to the 'muh dick' meme eternally spouted by people that dismiss hip-hop

his lit references are superficial and acts like he knows something based on some real entry level books

tbf you could say that about a lot of books on this site. Most of their references are the Bible, Paradise Lost, and Dante.

t. weeb only attracted to 2D drawings

>The yam brought it outta Richard Pryor
Manipulated Bill Clinton with desire.
>Warriors and Conan's hope euphoria can slow dance with society
>Build your own pyramids write your own hieroglyphs, call that shit hiiipower.
>You know why we crack babies? Because we born in the 80s that a.d.h.d. crazy.

I don't think you've looked into his lyrics very deeply at all user.

yeah, but Kendrick certainly has his own merit as a lyricist. I encourage you to at least check out To Pimp a Butterfly. Look into the lyrics as you listen and keep in mind that all of it was written to play with rhythm and cadence and rhyme schemes, more so than a good deal of traditional poetry. It seems a little silly to me to write someone off just because they exist outside the esoterica of the traditional literature world

post proof

How about an actual rapper who published an actual book of poetry?

Tupac Shakur - The Rose That Grew from Concrete

Cunninlynguists and AZ, Andre 3000 too

Long live the rose

I remember you was conflicted
Misusing your influence
Sometimes I did the same
Abusing my power, full of resentment
Resentment that turned into a deep depression

I recommended an album in the post you're responding to.

Eyedea

I've listened to the album many times, and I think it's a very good hip hop album, but can't recall any lyrics of serious literary merit.
Although personal and probably honest, this really isn't a great poem by any means. The poem he recites throughout the album is borderline Rupi-tier.

But again it's most Veeky Forums rap not most Veeky Forums poetry. You're going to have to show me a rapper doing a lot better poem. And while we're on the subject most poets probably are corny ass rappers.

>Build your own pyramids write your own hieroglyphs
we

>rapper spits conscious shit
>HURRRRRR WIGGERS

>most poets probably
holy shit he doesn't even read poetry
go back to /mu/, please

Rakim's content is pretty one note, but his style and cleverness is the foundation for hip hop. Like a hip-hop Shakespeare for wordplay, but without the vocabulary or insight into humanity.

I wouldn't consider any rappers literature though. It's too lowbrow to be considered that. It's like manga, I might consider some genius, but never literature.

He was even we wuz kanging here. The full
>So get up off that slave ship/ build your own pyramids write your own hieroglyphs

It's said that slaves built the monuments of Egypt and he's correlating the African American experience in the new world to the slaves of ancient times (a popular theme among African American Christians)

He's saying don't let where you came from or what you were prevent you from building your own monuments for yourself today. It's very different from from we wuz kangz now gibs

you're right about that, Rakim isn't the final evolution or the be-all-end-all of hip hop, but he did elevate and change the form so much that he will forever have a place in the rap pantheon

hopsin

I've read poets trying to rap. It's corny. Not that their other poems are bad but yeah their rapping is corny.

H.E.R. by common is literary, no? I've never read one of his poem collections but I know they're out there.

Lil Wayne's 6 Foot 7 Foot is absurd, ignorant, and witty. It's uniquely hip-hop. I don't normally like him but that song alone is one of the peaks of the genre.

Dr. Carter and A Milli also strike that balance between being blatantly ignorant and self-centered but also controlled and focused.

...

The light by common

Common is actually the most Veeky Forums rapper out there

>I was born by a lake, chicken shack and a church
>That mean the flow got wings and it come from the dirt
>Godly, I know she wanna test the 'Rari
>Eye on a dollar like Illuminati
>Life is foggy, tryna see through the mist of it
>Could have been living it, you was Mrs. Mischievous
>This is just a letter to better your development
>(Ohh!) Situation delicate

He's got some good multi syllablic rhymes
