Max Stirner

I've never read his work but I'm assumed by the memes that surround him. Should I read The Ego and Its Own? Is it entertaining? Is there a good English translation of it?

Yes you should!
The best translation currently is Wolfi Landstreichers (named The Unique and Its Property.
After that Steven T. Byington translation is good as well.

It's entertaining for sure, mostly because he writes without obscuring his words and because he was making fun of his contemporaries. Personally I like the Cambridge version the best, but the Landstreicher translation is the best to read because he translated the title the best and also translated Stirner's Critics, which is essential Stirner reading after The Unique and It's Property.

If you seriously wanna dig into Stirner though, you should try and read Feuerbach's The Essence of Christianity beforehand and Marx's section on Stirner of The German Ideology afterwards. It'll help a lot, trust me.

Why didn't he call it The Unique and HIS Property?

i've always really dug the drawing of Stirner. any artists with similar styles?

he's just a big baby who can't get over himself

He died a long time ago user

Seconded

Engels

it was literally just engels drawing on a napkin

I have the byington version, it's a fun book, I wouldn't really go and try to fully apply his philosophy to your own life unless you're comfortable with people thinking you're a edgy nazi/sjw (you'd be nothing but an edgelord, but people will still apply far left/right labels to the idealogy because it's 'radical' but not really on a left/right spectrum and current politics are cancer)

forgot my image

i know it was Engels, but he hasn't drawn much else, is there a name for this kind of style? it kind of reminds of new yorker cartoons

It won't be what you're expecting it to be, the memes tend to be a pretty big misrepresentation. iirc a lot of it is just history, and if you want to understand his ideas quickly you may want to skip to the part about the Unique. this, obviously, won't give you the full stirner experience (for something thorough I agree w/ ), but it might be good enough if you're checking it out because of a meme.

Try William Steig.

Engels, you perv

wtf I'm a communist now

if i remember correctly, Wolfi's Translation is supposed to be closer to the orginal German text.

The Ego and its own is translated as Unique and ITS Property because its talking about the mental qualities that makes up a unique person. The things that make you are your own are your property. This applies to either gender

He literally changed translated spuk as phantasm rather than spook.

David Shrigley.

He's a /lit meme that is not taken seriously by academia with the exception of a select few who claim Nietzsche stole his ideas. Which is silly considering Stirner was obscure and only somewhat known by socialists buttblasted by his criticism.
Nietzsche was only distantly aware of Marx, much less Stirner.
Memes aside, the idea of the spook is quite interesting and Ego and its Own (the translation we read when Max was actually popular on this board) is definitely worth a read, though its philosophy is not really practical and much of the work is repetitive, hashing out the same ideas in different ways.

IMO his reasons for that are ok. He translates Spuk as Phantasm because it refers to the person believing that an idea haunting them is just imaginary. Spook on the other hand, to him is closer to a haunting "thing"; Spook to him is more concrete then Phantasm

pic related in his own words

Der Einzige und sein Eigentum imo most closely translates to 'the only one and his property'. Ego and its own is pretty nice though desu.
