It's 2018. Stop teaching our kids about racist outdated books written by whites.

When did things change? It wasn't like this 5 years ago

You can be offended by anything now. Go figure.

Go back far enough and the the problem was reading books by women or blacks.

Both OPs example and mine are poor excuses to limit information. It's just fascism disguised as tolerance.

Totalitarian values very ironically seem to always find a way, I guess we were right to call it "Enlightenment" since it's just as unreachable as the Buddhist concept with the same name.

It's also quite ironic really, since the book is all about individual merit and segregating the person from their group representation (i.e there is more to people than their skin-deep). Banning it because it portraits an attack of group identity is akin to admitting the group surpasses the individual in a hierarchy of merit (e.g black people ironically can't ever be "people", only "black people", and this group representation will require constant validation, likewise for "white people"). I highly doubt Marx himself would approve of using this logic on society instead of economics. Alas, history is written by those who cry the loudest these days.

They want to remove To Kill a Mockingbird because it's against "listen and believe" ideology, racism and false rape charges.

>american education

Paradigm shift in 2012, but this is a symptom of a symptom of a symptom, the blackwashing and anti-white stuff.

You could say our tab over the last century has been called.

Man there have been a lot of /pol/ threads lately.

>I highly doubt Marx himself would approve of using this logic

You'd be right since he kicked out feminists and other proto-SJWs out of his movement.

It's not a new phenomon. Just the latest iteration of a phenomenon started during the late 60s.

>kids shouldn't read a book about how racists are horrible people because it portrays racists
>t. NAACP
wew lad

Let's just stop talking about it, it will go away eventually ^^

I think it makes sense that we have a lot of /pol/-worthy threads, because this is all campus ideology, and now that the filthy spawn of the early millennials is getting into the workforce, campus ideology is lurking into the workforce. Whether you like it or not, PC culture and its "problematization" trends are going to be part of everyone's day to day life, including things like having you or your child ostracized for reading certain books.

(((HMMM)))

Both are bad so it's k

>removing an anti racist book in the name of anti racism
I actually do not understand what they meant by this.

Good, children shouldn't be reading anti racist books

It's because a woman wrote it

Good

the book sucks anyways

The book is about surpassing prejudice against one individual, in detriment to his place within a pre-established group (i.e you're not "them", you're someone, and everyone deserves justice). Our contemporary SJW friends are all about SUPRESSING the individual in favor of group ideology ("we deserve"), and absolute belittling of whatever possibility there once was for individual valuation. If you think about it, racism has actually won, because now it must remain in existence, in order to validate the struggle and prowess of a group identity that only exists in opposition to it.

Theories of conflict apparently brainwashed folks into re-enacting their own enemies if needed, for the sake of preserving their original identity and turn it impervious to change. What good is anti-racism in a world where black people are treated fairly? Can't have anyone reading that book

>decidedly anti-racist literature that was considered beyond progressive for its time is bad now because of its historically accurate and realistic usage of the nigger word

I support taking off To Kill a Mockingbird, a meme
"trendy" book that has long overstayed its relevance, but I think Huckleberry Finn, while overrated, genuinely has an important place in American literature thanks to TS Eliot, Hemingway, and Ralph Ellison.

"Don’t you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought? In the end we shall make thoughtcrime literally impossible, because there will be no words in which to express it. Every concept that can ever be needed, will be expressed by exactly one word, with its meaning rigidly defined and all its subsidiary meanings rubbed out and forgotten...Every year fewer and fewer words, and the range of consciousness always a little smaller."

This is laughable and a nightmare at the same time. Orwell wasn't just right, he was exact.

I don't really see the big deal. The word nigger is considered inappropriate for kids so it's removed, doesn't this happen all the time with all sorts of subjects? There are lots of good american books that don't contain the word.

Yes and it is censorship all the time. Every time. If we teach kids that they can't deal with bad words in books, what are they going to be like when they grow up ? Will there even be something that they can deal with without breaking down, playing the victim or crying for help ?
The situation is bad enough as is, removing two well written, insightful and accurate books cannot be any good. And it will show.

>As with the Christian religion, the worst advertisement for Socialism is its adherents. [...] In addition to this there is the horrible — the really disquieting — prevalence of cranks wherever Socialists are gathered together. One sometimes gets the impression that the mere words "Socialism" and "Communism" draw towards them with magnetic force every fruit-juice drinker, nudist, sandal-wearer, sex-maniac, Quaker, "Nature Cure" quack, pacifist, and feminist in England.

Orwell was woke af.

Liberals have been doubling down since Hillary lost

>lately

But they’re not removing the works because they depict hardship, they’re removing them because of a bad word. It’s like they wouldn’t want a book with a bunch of ”cunt” and ”fuck” and ”dick” in it, regardless of the content. I mean heck wasn’t John Green’s book banned in some schools because of sexual content? As long as all of the books aren’t just sunshine and rainbows, it’s fine.

It is still a form of censorship and sugarcoating. As long as the work has a verified teaching purpose, there's no reason to remove it. They are taking away the books because it suits their agenda. Because they are bent on getting rid of racism when it is non-existent. Their identity is based off of being oppressed and when they are no more, they still look for oppression. Because without it they have no purpose, no identity.

>of the nigger word
i mean i dont like saying it at all and would never like anyone to say it, but that was funny

Yeah ok, so maybe kids won't read the word 'nigger' in school, and maybe its use in the mainstream media will diminish, but as long as there are websites like Veeky Forums, there is no way any institution is ever going to be capable of erasing even a single word from the public conscious.

I liked Huck Finn :(

Reminder: this is happening in a public school district. There’s nothing saying they’re banning the book or making it impossible to check out from the library or buying it in a store. If I followed my schools’ reading lists, I wouldn’t be the person I am today.
We can act shocked and appalled by some recondite school board deciding to appeal to their more vocal critics, but at the end of the day nothing is stopping kids from getting at the matter.

tl;dr it’s public school

You should all be collecting books and building a library for your progeny. Do not rely on the education system, and ideally find a wife who is intellectually capable of homeschooling children.

Thank you. People in this thread are acting like the media just announced that the government's burning books. If a school wants to remove a book from their curriculum it's none of my concern.

/thread

But there is a reason, they contain a word which today is extremely loaded and for many, very hurtful. I don’t understand why it’s so upsetting to you when removing sexual content isn’t. That’s censorship too. And it’s not like the kids aren’t allowed to read them, they just want to get rid of the word ”nigger” from the curriculum.

Atticus defended the black man in court... Literally dumb post

Do you really want a bunch of kids giggling at the word "nigger" in Minnesota?

I'm old enough to remember /pol/tards complaining about having to read To Kill a Mockingbird in school. Why complain until you learn what they replace them with. TKAM is a shit YA books regardless and while I enjoyed it as a shallow one dimensional book I think studying it is ridiculous. Twain isn't exactly the greatest American writer either.

>Twain isn't exactly the greatest American writer either.
Now these are fighting words

>individual merit and segregating the person from their group representation

That appears to be the current goal. Produce a conformist hivemind that can be easily manipulated to serve those in power.

>what they replace them with

That's the bigger question. I can't believe kids are having to read drivel like Divergent for school. Or worse, toxic badly-written SJW dreck.

Marxism truly got a hold of politics.

No, people have been banning these specific books since the 90s

Marxism has nothing to do with banning anti racist books that contain the n word

100% guaranteed it'll be replaced with charlie and the chocolate factory or some shit, that's always the usual suspect

> book that talks about racism being bad is banned in order to prevent racism
Huckleberry Finn was just a fun book to read, actually it’s funny how I learned about it from fairy odd parents as a kid and started my Veeky Forums journey

>another dead white man will be put in the curriculum
Yeah in your dreams white boi
