I am better than him

Depends on whether you consider his mostly-autobiagraphical works (Down and Out, Catalonia, etc) novels; if so, he's one of the most important modern novelists, and one of my favorites.
He himself didn't have the best opinion of his fiction pre-Animal Farm. Though I personally enjoy reading those early books, because they give me insight into his head, and into that era of English history, I wouldn't say it's top-notch literature.

I've never read anything by him because I can just tell by looking at him I won't like his books, just by the photo alone I can tell he writes like stephen king

OK novelist, god tier essayist

I can tell I'm being trolled but I can't tell how I'm meant to respond.

>god tier essayist
This. All those essays shitting on better writers because they weren't as progressive as him are so good. Yeats may have been a decent poet but he was such a fascist.

always found it odd that trotskyist propoganda is on the reading list of every school in america

I don't think he's as respected in the history of aesthetics/literature from an aesthetic viewpoint than as in the history of ideas, literature from a political and philosophical viewpoint. He's an OK novelist with some pretty good essays and it's worth reading his major works (1984, Animal Farm) if you want to get all the references to them in culture and media in general. If he hadn't written such works about the ethos of totalitarianism and fascism, someone else would have had to do it.

I'm actually not trolling I meant everything I said

Fuck the novels. Post some of his essays.

>implying there's anything wrong with being a fascist

Yeats were an Irish patriot who loved his people, country and was woke about the jews and marxists. orwell doesn't deserve to clean the dirt of his shoes

Orwell didn't like Jews or Marxists either. Orwell didn't like fucking anything

he fought for the commies in the spanish war, he was a bloody cuck

He considered himself a socialist, but he didn't like any Socialist group because nothing was good enough for him.

He was very much of the 'FDR, Stalin, and HItler are all the same thing' camp

>lol thinking that stalin and fdr were close to Hitler.

He should have joined forces with his European brothers against marxists and jews but no instead he decided to take the sargon route of the horseshoe theory

"you're all FASCISTS!!! I'm an individualist!!!"

>durrrr he has a stupid faec so he suxx

That's like saying you hate capitalism because you don't like the US president.

>horseshoe theory
I think it was more the Georgist or Nockian view of the state as a predator on the people, rather than a Left-Right thing.

I never exactly understood what he meant by Nationalism because it seems to simultaneously mean that the people are whipped up into a fervor but also that the state is increasing its oppression to the point of totalitarianism. I guess the two go hand in hand in some ways

which reminds actually of de Jouvenel's On Power, which talks about all this quite a lot

semantics I guess. If you hate all existing examples of something but like an ideal of it you have in your mind, what are you supporting exactly

>Is
he's dead mate

The economic model. Also he didn't hate the USSR BECAUSE they were economically socialist but because they were totalitarian and he also supported the Socialism in Catalonia.

>he also supported the Socialism in Catalonia.
This is true, which is wildly hypocritical of him, since they did all the evil shit that everyone else does when they gained power.

Just by looking at someone I can get a feel for their personalty and am able to tell what their writing is like. stop falling for the stupid "don't judge a book by it's colour" meme.

nonsense, nationalism is as old as history has, it simply means loving your country, culture and people most and fighting for them. The Romans were Roman nationalists, the Greeks Greek nationalists and the Celts Celtic nationalists. In fact anti-nationalism is the recent phenomenon used to undermine and control nations for jewish and marxists interests

the State being able to marshal armies consisting of the entire young male population, and putting the rest of the country to work in service of the war effort, is an entirely modern phenomenon.

But that's not exactly what Orwell was talking about anyway, it was more of a comment of the nature of political ideology

>BBC

Nationalism as it is most commonly though of in contemporary times is an invention of the Nineteenth Century.

>Nationalism simply means loving your country
Why are there so many illiterates on this board?

Ancient people were xenophobic but not nationalist. Nationalism is a 19th century concept. Also what you're describing is patriotism.

He was a mason btw

... And?

Good novelist is an oxy moron.

>he fought in a war like some kinda cuck
