I mean yeah that's the main purpose. You have access to a shit ton of new material now, you can read original works in that language, watch their tv, listen to their music, ect. Being able to understand more than one language feels great too, it feels like I have a lot more options for communication. You can speak with people that only speak that language, it opens up new relationship and travel opportunities. Learning a new language also teaches you a lot about language in general, I've learned so much about English structure and grammar from studying Spanish. It also taught me a lot about my learning style and enhanced my study skills. Not only that but there are studies that show learning a new language positively impacts the brain

You will be hard pressed to find anyone who reads 500 wpm even among the highly educated, much less someone who is in fucking elementary school and just learning how to read. I also think you would have to be mentally handicapped to only read 44 wpm.

this is dumb. i learned german and im at a point where i can really engage in german culture through their film and news and literature and it's almost like i have a second home even though i've never been there. it's a comfy feel i highly recommend.

Yes, why not? You can just Google things you don't understand.

Maybe read the wikipedia article on his life (or the introduction to the novel of his you're reading, assuming it has one) but otherwise just dive in. You're not going to understand it fully the first time, but you'll get something out of it and life is long enough that you can reread it later in life when you're in a different life position.

Something nobody on /lit seems to understand is those are aimed at people who don't read at all or read very little. If you are on /lit you probably aren't one of those people. There are diminishing returns from reading more and more so I bet many people here could benefit from reading less and doing other things more.

Notes from underground was mostly intrinsically understandable for me and I read it in Junior year on my own. Yeah I'm a fucking loser but at least I'm not a normie.

It's worth mentioning that Dosto is taught in high school in many places. If a person is willing to pay attention then his works shouldn't be very challenging

Teaching students to read certain books is fine and good, but most kids rush through them to make the grade. Having a personal desire to know the thoughts and stories of great men from times past and giving these books serious meditation is far more rewarding. It's a pity that the ambition to do such simply cannot be taught in school, it's something a person must desire.

They take pride in their narrow spike into literature, as if the prestige of those titles will reflect back onto them. But why would it? You've displayed no great wisdom or insight or discernment by simply reading a short, curated list of titles that other people have picked out for you. What have you got to be proud of? All you've done is discovered a surefire path to intellectual mediocrity, where you simply follow consensus and scoff at people who do not do exactly the same as you. How are you any different than mindless bandwagoning teenagers jumping from fad to fad? What will you do if all the authors you've carefully selected for their prestige suddenly fall out of vogue or become discredited? It took me nearly 3 years before I could watch a German film without subs comfortably. It took me about half that time to be able to read stuff by Hesse. It has been 4 years since I started, shortly after I graduated university and now I generally read at least one German book per month depending on length. I watch German films on the weekend, and I keep up with German news as well.

If I wasn't a poorfag I would move so I could work on my speech which still isn't that great. Anyway, my progress isn't remarkable by any means and most people could probably become fluent faster than me. Now since I can passively keep up my German by reading and watching TV I have started learning French. I suspect it won't take as long as German did.

I have a tendency to read as if I'll never read it again (side effect of years of shitty "mostly memorizing" study habits). But I'll avoid that, and consider outside sources for background and analysis.
