I study physics, have read many of the books Einstein wrote himself, and know a good deal about early 20th century physicists from my own interest. He's not an idiot and made many strides that other scientists thought ludicrous until they looked into them and realized how innovative they were.
The "number of people" who accused him of plagiarism was literally just the Third Reich. They painted relativity as "jewish physics" and outlawed its study, pressuring their own scientists to study quantum mechanics exclusively and under threat of expulsion from their institutions or worse for merely insinuating that relativity could have been valid. That's why Einstein came to the US for a conference and decided it would be unsafe to go back to Europe.
