What modern pop (in the broad sense) musician has the best lyrics?
ima say bill callahan, dude knows how to write a song
Morrissey, I'd say, but he was only good in his early years.
Julia Holter also has good lyrics sometimes.

i'd say morrissey too, but you look over his lyrics and he had maybe a great line or two in a song with the rest being pretty much filler
Nick Cave
>muuuuuuh cattle
>tsk-tsk
well most singers don't even come close to this level
yeah you're right
obviously
>will oldham
>gregory alan isakov
>iron & wine
>iggy azalea
why did u do this
Black on black lies is worse than black on black crime
The Jews share their truth on how to make a dime
Most black men couldn't balance a checkbook
But buy a new car, talkin' 'bout "how my neck look?"
Ariel Pink
listen to this and tell me it doesn't perfectly encapsulate the energies and ideologies of Modernity pushed to the nth degree

she may not intentionally do it, but Iggy A is writing at the peak of what modern lyricism can amount to and expresses better than any other the irate excess of our age
I will defend the importance of her lyrics to the death
Are you a woman
I could be for you
Tupac, Kurt Cobain, David Byrne, Deltron 3030, Pink Floyd, others.
Joanna Newsom
NWA too
george fisher
matt berninger
Del's lyrics are terrible though. Also I wouldn't call any of those artists modern.
mon frere
None modern pop is dogshit. Maybe this new Janelle Monae will be good but I'm not holding out for it.
Modern R&B has some gems but mostly you're looking for a needle in a "I'm just a young black man trying to get my dick wet" stack.
Will Oldham and David Berman (of the Silver Jews). Oldham is my favorite singer/songwriter and has an impressive, diverse discography. Berman is not as soulful, but he is a really clever lyricist with some great lines.

Never was a huge fan of Smog, what do you recommend? I've only heard "Knock, Knock" and found it enjoyable, but not compulsively so.
Pop music in the broad sense is any music really. Not just top 40 pop but rock, hip hop, indie can all be considered "pop"
MF DOOM first and foremost, that's my number one. X-RAY/King Caesar is good in his group. Metabolics/pimp daddy shrimp, Saba ain't bad, Tyler the creator ain't bad. Brockhampton is real good. I normally only listen to the older 90s type rap like Big L and tribe called quest type shit.
Robert Hunter
Probably an american standard writer like rogers and hammerstein
