I have finished Memeakami’s latest opus “Killing Commendatore” in Japanese, AMA.

Anything new here or is it more of the same ?
Is it as boring as the rest of his stuff?

The memes are out in full force, although I did not get Bingo haha. He kind of comes across as a parody of himself.
But it has a bit different feel kind of. I would say it is his most “Japanese” book.
How most Japanese?
Like for example at one point two characters discuss the qualities of Japanese painting and what makes it what it is. They also discuss something related to Japanese Buddhism. There is one instance where the discuss a brother of one of the characters who participated in the Nanking Massacre.
Actually I don’t really fully abide the criticism that Murakami isn’t “Japanese”. He isn’t in superficial ways, like his characters never having miso soup for breakfast and shit, but I think muh isolation and muh ennui are very much pervasive aspects of the Japanese experience.
Interesting. Thank you!
I've always thought the same thing--even though his characters tend to be interested in Western music & food, there's a certain depressive loneliness that Japanese literature tends to pull off very well, and so does HK.
What's your favorite color?
How does it stack up to The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle and Hardboiled Wonderland?
