According to my unprofessional opinion History have quite often shown us that humans may be pushed to set their own interests aside or force others to do the same for the sake of someone or something else. And all the books do have people that try to go against the system, just that due to various functions of them they are few in number. And the writers were of coursed affected by the times they lived in, Orwell would see one world war ravage the earth with the rise of new ways of monitoring people and the guy who wrote Fahrenheit 451 would see the rise of television and radio. People are often a at least a bit worried about change and fear the worst.

I agree with you that places like reddit allow a more uniform thought by having ways to enforce it, but I also think that Veeky Forums, especially some boards, allow some things to resonate. The biggest difference, hence why you'll almost always see people disagreeing and cursing each other, is that Veeky Forums's only characteristic that tries to make things uniform is stuff like "board culture".

I think todays is a different combination of all three, except we have self imposed suppression from how social media puts people in isolated bubbles.

I notice this especially with children today, they are always plugged into their smart phones or whatever. I never see kids play outside anymore. We are raising a generation of bubble children.
