What makes some cultures better at fighting/war than others?

What makes some cultures better at fighting/war than others?

psychedelic drugs and religion that demands you to die bravely in battle to enter their heaven

No

Poverty and a strong sense of pride in your culture and/or country.

Except norsemen had more heavens than just fucking Valhalla and berserkers didn't exist.

Can't think of cultures being good at war by themselves.
War capabilities are more a result of resources, experience and internal stability than cultural. Just look at very militaristic societies like Sparta and Prussia: they both got rekt multiple times by less militaristic cultures.

Long drawn out periods of war and/or hardship, this makes the population hard af and unlikely to be a pushover, particularly if they have been fighting for a good few decades

this explains slavs

In some cases. Spartans were famed warriors because they lived in huts and had guts. At the same time the Athenians had the richest polis in Greece and could still go toe to toe with the Spartans.

in terms of valour, being poor and egalitarian
in terms of strategy, being rich and heirarchial

Except
>furor teutonicus
People did actually wear bear skins
Shield biting occured

I think it's the environment. Ghastly be harsh all of the fierce warrior types all live in abrasive terrain, Scottish, Spartans, Afghans, Romans to some extent as they bordered the alps, Maoris, Finnish, etc...

Huh, I never thought of it like that: militarism =/= adept at war

>Saddam's Iraq
>the then most militaristic state in the world
>have strong core of battle hardened officers, veterans, and world class special forces
>curb stomped in less than 2 weeks by superior equipped and lead American part-time soldiers

better at individual fighting=/=better at war

In the long run, entities with cultures dominated by warfare always get their shit kicked in. Wars are won by the economies behind the armies.

yeah, furor TEUTONICUS,not furor vicingicus.

Teuton was often used as a collective term for germanics, and it is in furor teutonicus. Sure memetic berserkers didn't exist but charging barbarians wearing skins certaintly did

Being white helps.

Getting an uneducated and easily manipulable mass of people (usually lower and middle class) to form a strong sense of nationalism or egalitarianism, especially in "heritage" and starting wars to keep the upper hierarchy with resources to keep expanding empire, or just replace those social constructs with religion, either way its all the same.

Unless they happen to be muslims, who have literally always been the fucking antichrist.

something you people arent taking into account is that war changes

The Spaniards were the best soldiers on the sea, when fighting on the sea was about getting next to your enemy and boarding the enemy ship, when it became about fighting with cannon balls from a long distance, they became second rate.
They had the best army when fighting was mainly about stabbing your enemies with a pike, when the French evolved military tactics, they became second rate.
