What makes a man turn into a sociopath?

What makes a man turn into a sociopath?

>pic extremely related.

They are born that way.

I have a hard time believing that.

Poor socialisation and, in my opinion, a disillusionment with society. A problem I have with the term 'sociopath', however, is that I've seen so many different definitions. I've always thought that a sociopath was someone that CAN feel empathy but can 'turn it off' so to speak, and a psychopath is someone who generally feels no empathy. Am I right in these definitions?

You're born with sociopathy

Well, neither of the terms is actually an official one. They're commonly used to describe different varieties of Antisocial Personality Disorder.

Both describe a person who does not feel empathy, but sociopaths, in general, cannot function very well in society because they also don't understand empathy. Psychopaths understand empathy, and know how to simulate it in their interactions with other people, and so they can often be indistinguishable from normal people.

idk, ask a psychologist. don't accept any answers here unless they give valid proof from a non-biased source

single moms, no male established boundaries growing up to internalize

It's a real, observable, physiological difference in the brain, which people can be and are born with.

That's not to say that certain life experiences or conditioning (usually in childhood) can't create similar symptoms in a person.

its a feedback loop. while it can be bio-disposed such as the warrior gene which resembles criminality in all populations, it has to beckoned by environmental stimuli as well.

Aaron Hernandez had both his parents around. His father was supposed to be a real stand up guy.

He sees the truth about society.

Then he was born a sociopath or had an existential crisis when he was like 8.

There are multiple definitions

Psychosis: A sane person can't think, due to drugs, damaged cognition or lack of discipline approaching a traumatizing event

Social: Somebody grew up with lesser morals and were never sane

Stupidity: Somebody was born retarded and can't defer right from wrong

Sociopath is not even used in the DSM anymore

what did he do?

I more or less use sociopath interchangeably with narcissism.

A sociopath is a kind of psychopath that attempts to make excuses for it.

They don't feel empathy, but they can simulate empathy to help make their decisions.

You have that in reverse, psychopaths are the ones that literally cannot conceive of empathy. They also have greatly impaired risk assessment and general decision making.

Psychopaths are much less functional in society than sociopaths.

Murdered at least there people, including two guys after one of them accidentally spilled a drink on him at a club.

They are born that way. There have been many experiments ranging from newborn to kids to adults.

Not all sociopaths turn out extremely bad, but most have difficult time adjusting in society.

Wasn't Dahmer from a pretty stable nuclear family too? I might be getting him mixed up though.

Massive self esteem. Self esteem so high that your very life is worth less than an act of disrespect to their self esteem.

I always wondered if someone could develop symptoms of ASPD because of philosophy

heh

I like this

>Need excuses for a genetic condition.

You need a combination of genetic factors and a violent and unsettled upbringing. Absent a traumatic childhood you can still be psychopathic, but you will be a so-called "socially positive psychopath", the kind of fearless people who become hero cops, soldiers, politicians and ceos.

Dahmer wasn't a sociopath, he was psychotic.

>I more or less use sociopath interchangeably with narcissism.

Well you shouldn't because they're quite different. Most sociopaths have antisocial personalities, not narcissistic ones.

>A sociopath is a kind of psychopath that attempts to make excuses for it.

Nonsense. The terms are synonyms.

I have a friend who I suspect is a sociopath, although he's not like the typical one. He's really smart and charismatic, but he uses it to his own advantage and takes advantage of people. He can literally argue in favor for anything. He also has no sense of empathy in my opinion and complains about feelings. He said he felt sad when his mom died but never cried and even went to school the next day. He's very libertarian and also hardcore Mormon but not really a thumper. It took a while to notice these things and now I'm getting a worried. He was able to get a full ride with a business major to some school in Utah after a well written essay. Is he actually a sociopath?

You must be an adult to be diagnosed with sociopathy. What you describe sounds like a typical teenager.

Malignant narcissist most likely. Does he get shitter shattered by criticism and either freeze up or want to hurt someone?

it's pretty fucking likely it takes both nature and nurture

>freeze up
Come to think of it he kinda does, especially when he doesn't get many chances to defend himself. He just sort of brushes it off and acts like they're crazy even though he could have said something.

There is a genetic component, linked to fearlessness, that you must have to become a sociopath. However, the upbringing a child with this trait gets is the vital determinant of whether they become a criminal or pro-social sociopath.

conformance to BS definition that didn't even existed until several decades ago

Sociopathy is lawful evil

Psychopathy is chaotic evil

No, both are neutral evil.

Sociopaths can't be neutral evil because sociopaths have a code they adhere to which dictates their actions- that code is generally just at odds with society's prevailing code.

>because sociopaths have a code they adhere to which dictates their actions

No, they don't. Where did you get this idea from? Was it Hollywood movies?

shitposting is playing d&d

Sounds like an acquaintance of mine and he's a textbook narcissist.
