Virtually every piece of personal property you own is worthless
If you lose your job you lose everything

How are you any different from a slave? At least a slave is guaranteed a job and a roof over their heads

In the end even early wage slavery was worse than what we have now, the thing that changed the world wasn't the level of "freedom" but instead the level of automation

Debt slavery sounds alright. The idea that an individual who has committed a grievance owes society a debt that just be paid either in currency, or labor. Ideas of mandatory military/civil service stem from beliefs such as these.

So it depends on how the individual views right and wrong when the question pertains to a person's ability to exercise their free will.

Working chattel slaves to death was bad. Cutting people's balls off was bad. Kidnapping children to sell them in far away lands was bad.

If you were the right type of slave in the right society, you might be able to live a good life or even come to power, like Mamluks and Habshis. House servants probably got off the easiest, though they still had worse conditions than their paid equivalents. Agricultural chattel slaves had it worse, while others were usually used for jobs too degrading or dangerous for hired labour such as mining.

Workplace reforms of course are important, but those were only necessitated by the automation. The automation led to a growth in capitalism, which in turn led to the profit makers maximizing profit which led to the reforms, to avoid the economy from turning socialist and all their heads being chopped off.

it was pretty bad as a concept, but not much worse than wage labour in certain aspects.

don't quite get this. Early industrial factory conditions, right in the middle of europe or US, were way worse than almost anything we see today. Everybody, including 8-year old kids or so, working twelve hours a day, wage only barely above what allows you to stay alive, flat out beating down of any form of resistance, and so on and so forth.

I'd been listening to the Yale course on ancient greece and apparently "slavery" was a pretty wide spectrum, going from antebellum USA all the way to "basically a farmer like any other, except for not being allowed to engage in politics" or even being "slaves of Apollo" which seems to not have been different from normal life in any way at all. I suppose you could argue those forms weren't as bad.

The ugly truth is that blacks who were brought as slaves actually won the lottery compared to those who were left behind.

Slavery in itself isn't always detrimental on a physical level to the slave, and while it may have been better to work on a plantation relative to remaining in Africa that is hardly a good argument that conditions were "good".

I myself find slavery being immoral if it is the result of nothing more than one's race. Indentured servitude is alright with me though.

Debt slavery or debt forced labour you can make trumped out charges to enforce it and often the duration is unknown let alone the fact you can potentially die during the service and the person you are indebt to may not look out for your welfare such as throwing you into mortal danger.
