Leftists realized that farmers and workers are pretty moderate or right-wing people, that didn't care much about sharing their hard earning money as the wealth and prosperity in the beginning of the 20th century rose up. The only people that cared about that stuff were intellectuals, so leftism became about culture, especially undermining western culture.
