Manage the scarcity of resources

If every natural resource was unlimited and easily accessed there would be no need for an economy.

To provide arms and calories for armies, so as to maintain fighting capabilities.

To steal from others

To encourage the populace to work, in various fields.

I like, but how do you know all actors will be rational? Surly that assumption affects how utility is calculated?
Best answer

To serve the Nation.

An economy has no purpose, it is an emergent phenomenon that arises due to people exchanging goods and services. Without this, there is no economy.

But isn't the purpose of economy exchanging goods and services? I feel like i got into some kinda of paradox.

But it's affects are far more than just the exchange of goods & services, so should it not have a purpose more than that? Maybe I should have asked what SHOULD the purpose of an economy be?

This right here.

Inadequate distribution of property rights m8.
Tragedy of the commons.

The point is market economies incentivize the unsustainable consumption of scarce resources, and is the root cause of the tragedy of the commons in most cases.

>This thread is full of neoclassical shills

The only answer is profit(for the capitalist mode of production, there is diferent motives in other modes)

to provide maximum liberty/utility for the individual

which translates to maximum liberty/utility for the collective with proper laws

You talk about an economy as it is something is created rather than something that is emergent and natural.

The question you put is like the question of the purpose of life and less like a question about the purpose of a tool.

To satisfy a society's needs

No, it doesn't. Like the user above said, it's an inadequate distribution of property rights, and even if that doesn't work you can use the power of a government or similar entity to solve that kind of problems.

the economy is a byproduct of supply and demand. If supply and demand didn't exist the economy wouldn't exist either.

For the rich to extract resources from the poor.

>Le explotation maymay

The economy isn't zero sum ffs.

>Profit

Does the hungry man not profit from buying food?
Profit doesn't have to be in monetary terms.

Sure seems like it, considering we've only one earth to extract resources from.
