They were recorded in the eastern most of modern FYROM around lake Orchid in a place called arbanon.

Before the 'split' they took control of the illyrian city of albanopolis and the similarity in names led people to call them Albanians.
Sometime after this the split occurred. Some converted to Islam and worked with the Turks when convenient and the rest resisted the Turks and did not convert. They also never accepted the albanian label and to this day do not. They fled to Greece and Italy in the 1700/1800s and helped with the Greek war of independence.
They also don't called themselves shptars, only Albanians do.
