Old thread is autosaging Old thread here; >I am able to run US/Canadian VINs (anything with a fitting VIN; bikes, cars and so on) and US plates. For plates the same rules apply as VINs; 1981 or newer, US registered, and the plate and state are needed. Plates do work most of the time, but VINs are more reliable. >Please remove hyphens (dashes) from VINs/plates - unless they happen to be part of a vanity plate. This makes copying and pasting easier. >I can only run vehicles in/originally in the USA/Canada. If they've been exported from the USA/Canada, a report with their time here will be available. Not yet sure about imported cars. >Vehicles need to be of the 1981 model year or newer. That's when standardized VINs began. Anything older simply cannot be run for a report. >There are never I(i), O(o), nor Q(q) in VINs. This is to avoid confusion with 1 and 0. So if you are unsure, it is always 1 or 0 (not the case for classic cars, but they cannot be run anyway). >VINs must be 17 characters exactly. No more, no less. >If you want the PDF-file you can open the page source (F12) and search "amazonaws", copy the whole link and put it in your browser. This should allow you to download the PDF. If its not working send me an email at [email protected]. Please leave a reply if you do so
This is actually mine, I just wanted to see if the hit and run to the rear end got reported to insurance or not. Was less than deductible in damage so just had a little shop fix it, but my insurance company was still informed at time of incident

>Holy hell guys, I was wondering what the fuck kinda bath salts I had been on. That guy who "ran" the last batch ain't me
I was bored and wanted to see how stupid people can be. What are you doing awake so early anyway?

how much of a red flag is it if Seller wont give you the VIN until you "come see the car"

thank you so much Benz, you are saving me from bad deals.
Justin Torres
a red flag is that he is hiding something that will show up if you run a history report.
He will try to sell you the car without checking the VIN. No matter how clean and new a car looks, it can still have a salvage title, multiple accidents and/or owners in its history.
Tyler Murphy
This is most definitely a possibility. And it was always my first assumption when I was shopping. But if it is a private seller, the person may simply be ignorant/pointlessly cautious. I've seen a few people who thought you could do some sort of dastardly things with a VIN. In this day and age, when identity theft and other information related crimes are on the increase, I can see why someone who doesn't know better would be concerned.
What I would do, if it is a private seller, is tell them that no personal information can be obtained using a VIN and the reason you want it is to have a history report run on the vehicle. Typically, this will get them to give the VIN. If they still won't give it to you, assume that either the vehicle has something bad they are hiding, or they are ignorant AND stupid (which of course makes still makes me worried about their care of the vehicle...), or that the ad is a scam.
If it's a dealer who won't give you the VIN, there is definitely something they want to hide.

Look at the drastic change in miles? What happened? If the engine was replaced wouldn't there be a record showing that?
I just want a mid size truck that doesn't have a dodgy record.
Hunter Lopez
Here's what I am thinking.
The 6 to 63K to 8.5K is a typo. The 63K should be some sort of 6K and it just has an extra digit. That would go in sequence.
That's probably the same issue with the 9.2K to 171K. Probably 17K something with an extra digit.
As for the rest of it, They seem in order. Quite a bit of mileage put on, but I have known a couple guys who put on FAR more than that. And the presence of "not included in rollback calculation" suggests that AutoCheck also viewed these instances as typos and doesn't see any suspicious issues.

Looks like some dipshit shop fucked up and added on the 10ths.

If vins are a thing beginning 1981, what about cars before 1981? How are the identified today?
Brandon Cooper
There were still VINs prior to 1981. But there was no standardization. So each manufacturer had its own ways of doing it. Some were shorter, some were longer. Some had only numbers.
Sometimes it was more of a "chassis code", where it was just a sequenced number given to a car based on production.
It was a mess. Standardized VINs are definitely, in my opinion, a positive change in automotive history.

Guys I just gotta say thank you for giving me power in terms of buying vehicles I've been ripped off in my younger years and still think about in bedfrom time to time.
