>tfw you actually talk with a real life conservative and realise why you used to be left-wing
Do you guys feel like being a traditionalist/reactionary only works online? IRL it's always a beacon of disgusting anti-intellectualism. Not even really old people actually buy into it, I've talked with grandparents who are stronger liberals than I am. Should one really align his claims with the least educated?
Cameron Cook
Most people are idiots. You will realize this when you talk to people.
Kayden Mitchell
Education =/= intelligence
A 2 sided political spectrum is dumb too. I'd be considered left even though I'm more libertarian than anything.
Also, this I find that most people are stupid about most things.
Alexander Hughes
you musnt have been born anywhere very notable to either actually believe or otherwise tout this shit
i was born in 1989 and raised stuanch neo conservative, from this at a young age i became an anarchist and realised the meaningless of of these sub-labels to social orchestration
Luke Rivera
Funny enough. I used to be Right wing and voted for Bush in 2000. Until I learned economics.
Then I realized free markets don't exist in a vacuum and that if you leave an economy alone it will natural go through boom and bust cycles resulting in shit economies regardless of the invisbile hand.
Then I guess I became a state capitalist. I vote for the left as well because the right always talks about religion and enforcing their particular view of it.
Nolan Adams
Specifically this anti-abortion nonsense.
We really need degenerates to have abortions to make society better.
Its been proven that abortion reduces crime rates so I just can't support the right.

Honestly, I feel the same way when I talk to most liberals. I'm a liberal with a very conservative heart.
You'll come to realize eventually that politics is one of those areas wherein the people who are the most certain are usually the dumbest of dumbfucks. I'm kind of a sucker for talk radio, but it has absolutely ruined American conservatism.
And when you start leaning the other way, you realize that, despite the fact that right-wing characterizations of the left are completely made up, the liberals are still just as stupid and anti-intellectual as the conservatism you were trying to flee.
People are dumb as fuck. Learn how the world works and you'll find yourself not exactly left, right, OR center.
Jason Jones
I don't vote left because I like them.
I vote left because they aren't threatening to repeal the Dodd Frank act, which if done so will result in another 2008 meltdown after another bubble happens due to bad wealth management.
Asher Torres
>Honestly, I feel the same way when I talk to most liberals >try to explain socialism and why I'm socialist and not a social democrat to people >get called stupid for either wanting a stalinist welfare state by centrists and the right or get called stupid by people on the left for not knowing that socialism means welfare state
Brayden Richardson
judging by the wording of your post, i dont think you understand what caused the 2008 bubble because guess what, we're in a bigger housing bubble right now than we were before
Luis Rivera
Actually I think the problem is that we have first past the post and a skewed congress system.
If we had proportional representation like Germany, we could have the Socialists, Libertarians, State Capitalists, and all sorts of parties in Congress.
Yet, we just get lessors of two evils now.
Thought I'd doubt congress would ever vote themselves out of office in my lifetime.
Zachary Jackson
Can we abolish the electoral college too while we're at it?
Dominic Clark
To be fair, Glass Steagal was repealed under Clinton, but the Republicans put it through Congress on their watch.
Bush did nothing but to push housing for everyone through Fannie Mae and Freddy Mac.
The Banks went hog wild giving loans and the ratings agencies didn't do their job and gave shit loans AAA rating.
It was a perfect shit storm.
Really, Bush had eight years to prevent it but he did nothing but push for more house loans to people who could not afford it.
Dodd Frank isn't perfect but it prevents banks from giving out such dubious loans on such a scale.
Yes the housing market is over priced, but Banks are stingy with their loans now and require a good deal of down payment rather than before where they would give anyone a loan.
To be fair, I have my house without a down payment because of the policy, but I didn't default on my loan so it wasn't so bad.
Oh and the reason for bubble now is Chinese buying up property in well to do areas.
If you want deals go buy in Detroit.
Aaron Phillips
Yes. We'd be better off with a Prime Minister.
Joseph Long
Also if it wasn't the repeal of Glass Steagal that caused the housing bubble in 2008?
What was it?

I used to be a leftist as well, not the American kind mind you, but a true Communist.
Fortunately, I kept reading and learning and I can't say I am anymore, even though I'm still critical of capitalism.
I find myself agreeing more and more with what certain people who self-identify as conservative say with age, and I don't really have an explanation for why that is, other than their propensity to cite statistics and facts to further their point of view.
People like Thomas Sowell, or Larry Elder spring to mind, even though I don't agree with them on everything either.
Jonathan Powell

Sure have. Exchange students in my country even echoed the same sentiment.
And I've seen Noam Chomsky mention how common it is, and even Dave Rubin the other day had to say to his audience in a Youtube video that he was probably going to get criticism for voting for Gary Johnson for that exact reason.
Alexander Robinson

>And I've seen Noam Chomsky mention how common it is, and even Dave Rubin the other day had to say to his audience in a Youtube video It's among the lowest of cliche's in American politics and unironically saying it in a civil and serious discussion is liable to get you mocked out of the spotlight

>I mean, since there never has been a third party candidate winning the Presidential election in modern times, I'm pretty sure I'm not wrong. But we've already covered why that is.
Here is the long and short of it; Somebody who unironically uses the "throw your vote away" line is somebody who is likely to get sidelined in the larger picture of politics, even in the oddball chance that the whimsical third party would get elected.
That is because the politicians matter very little. What does matter are the Lobbies and PAC's (who come from all walks of life and represent all sorts interests and ideologies) who directly speak to the politicians while claiming to represent a larger group with a specific interest and try to influence them to pass their agenda
Next time you speak to such a student, ask them what they think of the financial services lobby. If they even know what the hell a lobby is, I would be blown away, much less if they know the specifics of what lobbies are concerned with what interests
Andrew Foster
>I mean, since there never has been a third party candidate winning the Presidential election in modern times, I'm pretty sure I'm not wrong. That's because Americans have Open Primaries, FPP and zero notion of party whips the way Europe has them. So anytime someone runs for President and actually intends to win, they just highjack one of the parties, which happens routinely.
Jordan Campbell

Many contributing factors. But off the top of my head:
1. Repeal of Glass-Steagal coupled with a low federal interest rate for an extended period of time served to push many banks to invest in real estate assets and securities
2. The Fair Housing Act contributed to some degree, although how much is _highly_ debatable, and frankly not much fun to engage in.
3. Organic capture of the credit rating agencies and the SEC
4. Sheer complexity of the securities involved made it very difficult to determine how much risk to which an investor was exposed
5. The size and quantity of banks involved meant that a large enough loss virtually insured the US government would inject funds to prevent them from going, no matter how risky of a bet they took
