That's just how it works with this game, especially when you switch to characters who have very little in common. I got my Kensei to rep 5 and decided I wanted to play some other characters. I got my Shugoki to rep 1 before I felt like I had any idea WTF is was doing. When learning a new character you have to be ready to lose a lot. Just make sure you learn something from every game, win or lose.
