You can raise points by hanging out with them outside of their main conversations and other miscellaneous means.
You're probably going to fuck yourself out of being able to do ALL of the social links without a guide regardless. Accept that and move on.

If you don't have enough points you just spend time with them until they have enough points to rank up. You can always use fortune to boost
