What went wrong?

What went wrong?

Had they not made so many missteps with the Pacer they may have lived well into the 1990s. Hell, they might have still been around today.

I thought you were better than this, Veeky Forums. I thought you didn't get infested with summerfag cancer.

...

Shoddy build quality, "muh union" workers striking every six months, financial mismanagement, and an unwillingness to evolve.

Shame, imho tied with Datsun as the best cars of the 70s

This.

But let's remember - union disarray, financial bungles, and build quality were a result of (((their))) interference.

Can't have an uncontrollable dynamo running rampant over your good little goy automakers. GM, Chrysler, and Ford were good little goys, they put an end to AMC and maintained the American monopoly for (((them))).

Unions fucked them over and there was a small market for their cars

IED's

THE FRENCH

Nowhere is immune, not even /n/

>unions
>wouldn't innovate anything that wasnt jeep
>tried to live off of jeep
>made unicorn cars for autists and preppers
>stopped making anything that would get them market from normies

fantastic car for autists, but perpetually rebadged car with a lift kit doesn't really appeal to normies

Jeep brand must be a curse, because now Chrysler and Fiat are so tainted they're milking the name for all is worth since none of their shit sells, wonder who ends up with it next?

make it a foot longer, paint it flat black and put a blower on it. Boom, instant market success.

Build quality. Otherwise, they were pretty unique.

>implying Chrysler wasn't shit to begin with
The only reason Chrysler lasted this long is because they devoured AMC's Jeep line.

>What went wrong?
The workers felt they were underpaid compared to those at the other USA automakers Chrysler, Ford, and GM. Year after year, the workers sabotaged the cars in protest. That led to bad reliability ratings and reviews. Thus, the workers' anger and willingness to sabotage the company weakened its sales tremendously.

>Shoddy build quality
The workers deliberately sabotaged cars by doing shoddy work deliberately. It was their way of protesting without going on strike because they still greedily wanted to collect their paychecks.

The other problem was the murder of the Renault CEO who was turning AMC around slowly but surely. But he was murdered by two people riding up to him on a motorcycle who shot four bullets into his head and chest. The replacement CEO didn't feel like turning the company around was worth it and sold it off to Chrysler.

Sourcing leftover semi to completely junk parts from everyone else, and being bought by Chrysler.

They built junk. Just like the big three.

They just ran out of money first.

The japanese also helped put an end to AMC by buuilding cars that were not absolute shit

Any company involved with Renault is doomed to go to shit. Look at Nissan post-2002.

>tfw Nissan now sells nothing but shitboxes and the overpriced memecar

and now that Mitsubishi is in the fold if you thought they were bad you aint seen nothing yet.

Chrysler bought them and promptly shut them and their factories down despite promising they'd keep AMC alive as long as possible, all so they could have the rights to Jeep.

funny how chrysler went to shit so fast after buying out AMC

If not for the Minivan, the K-car and cannibalizing AMC they would have died out in the 80s.

Niggers will keep Nissan afloat with their Maximas and Altimas.

I'm amazed they're still alive today. They have like seven different models across all their brands, and almost all of them have looked exactly the same for the past decade. I think it's because Fiat just wants to use Chrysler as a vesicle for selling Italian cars in America, much like how Renault used AMC.

This, they put too much into that thing, granted it sold like hotcakes when it first launched, but then they had basically no money, forcing them to use even more scraps from the other major auto manufactures. Also the Renault CEO getting murdered like said and the successor just selling it to Chrysler who mostly just bought it for Jeep.

It was mostly they went to shit after Iaccoca Left, got a big head and then went back to doing the same shit they were pre K-car era. Granted shit isn't quiet as bad as it was then for them yet but still.

Honestly they probably do. The only thing that keeps them alive really is Trucks, Challengers, and Chargers (as well as Police contracts) as far as I can see at least. And of course Fiat money keeping them alive too.

Just think. If AMC had survived well into the 90s, we'd have Twingos in the US.

...

And then they wouldn't be a meme by default of them being available and everyone in the US knowing how bland of a shit box they are.

Did AMC make any cars worth considering buying today?

>American company on Italian life support
Darkest timeline

>African Americans, with their preference for larger sedans with broad curves and broad powerbands, will keep Nissan afloat with their continuous purchasing of Maximas and Altimas.

Happy you flaming queer?

CJ
Comanche
Eagle
Javelin
Concord
Wagoneer

That's all that comes to mind if you aren't looking for shitty meme cars.

Not Spirit?

Whoops. I forgot about that one.

>What went wrong?
The key problem that caused a cascade of other problems were the disgruntled workers deliberately doing a poor job assembling the cars. It was not just one or two but many of them. That gave AMC a negative reputation that it never recovered from. Those workers shot themselves in the foot.

niche products
not enough research and development

AMC sunk millions into designing the pacer specifically for a GM Rotary power plant but GM never actually built those engines so AMC had to figure out how to shove a i-6 inside the bespoke engine bay. It sold well at first but trailed off drastically, and because of the sun penetrating the glass the dash and trim pieces would literally disintegrate over time.

1973 was a real shit year for the Auto industry because of the Yom Kippur War and the OLPEC embargo against the US. Basically Syria and Egypt with backing from a bunch of other Muslim countries decided it was a good idea to attack Isreal and the US took one side and the Soviet Union took another.

Between the first oil shock and upcoming safety and emissions regulations the writing was on the wall for AMC. Even if the Renault deal ultimately killed them in the end, AMC was not prepared to go from a regulatory climate that was basically non-existent to stringent requirements.

>Had they not made so many missteps with the Pacer they may have lived
It was the irate workers that killed their company. They must have had a few sociopathic or even psychopathic but charismatic hotheads that convinced lots of other workers to deliberately do shoddy work. They thought they would force the company to pay them more but still avoid going on strike and losing their salary.

All they did was wreck the company's reputation and the customer base never forgot the shoddy quality. The workers completely went about it the wrong way and ruined their employer.
