I key cars to reduce their value before purchasing them. I'll typically find a car I like on Craigslist or local classifieds, locate it, stake it out for a few days then request a viewing. A few hours before the viewing (so they can't cancel) I'll swing by and key it then use that as an excuse to knock off a few hundred bucks from the price.
