Most major makes of new cars have the "phone home" feature built-in. GM's OnStar is not the only subscription service you can get. BMW, Mercedes, Honda, Lexus, Kia, and others have features as well. It's just that GM is the most advanced with theirs in terms of features that the consumer can use including WiFi wireless internet. When testing its range, I can be at the other end of my house and still get a strong fast signal from the car's hotspot in the garage.
