What went wrong?

They're pretty decent - the Civic of America.

The main problems with them is that they burn oil and they rust out since many of them are old as fuck by this point.

they held up better because think of who buys a civic with no options basically libruls

i had a brochure of a saturn s series from the 90s and it was basically this car is economical and friendly to the environment and well made even though it looks boring and is cheap

they didn't market it properly, but america is the land of plenty so why should they go for a saturn when they can splurge on a lincoln?

people bought em and there used to be plenty of commercials for em problem is gm thought they could take shitty opels and sell them as saturns instead

Saturn is garbage

I like how not one of you has actually praised any particular car, you just keep repeating the same lies over and over.

This board is fucking done. I'm so sick of all the bait and fake posts.

yes, just look above in the pic.

The s series was fantastic

Everything else was cross platform gm garbage forced on them by the brass

Stop bieng a petulant child.

AMC could have been dominant. They were the very first American manufacturer to focus on compact, fuel efficient cars. They started doing this in the 1950s, and got a reputation for being an economical choice because George Romney had them make that shift to compacts right before the Recession of 1957 hit. AMC might not have sold as many of them compared to Ford, but people knew "AMC=Economical Transportation". That was their cachet, and if they had followed it up into the 70s, they would have been in the literal best possible place to reap the oil embargo. If AMC had been there to take up the compact slack while the rest of the Big 3 got their shit together, they might have actually become the Big 4 like they always dreamed. Hell, they might have even kept the Japanese from making serious inroads into the country.

However, George Romney was the big proponent behind AMC focusing on compacts. He was the one who decided that AMC would fill that niche because the Big 3 was ignoring it, and when he left to become Governor of Michigan, the guy they brought in to replace him discarded that vision. He had AMC start to try and compete with the Big 3 head-on in every level of the market, and that was a fight AMC just simply could not win. It lead to their downfall.
