sounds about right. Are you in the bay area or LA area? I personally feel that NorCal drivers are SLIGHTLY less overall awful than SoCal, if only because the fwys around there aren't as wide and prolific.
on the plus side, some of the most scenic roads in the country are merely an hour and a half away in the countrysides and mountain paths of California.

The more bikes that filter the better, it eases congestion and keeps bikes out front and away from potentials being rear ended.
It's not "beating" you at traffic or "cutting the line", it's a safety issue.
