I never really understood that part, are you suppoed to use the current gender even when you are talking about the person before the transition?
I once had a FtM roommate, and I tried really hard to say "he/him" etc but I never knew what to say when I was talking about the time when he moved in (ie was still a grill).

It's difficult, no doubt. You could still call them "he/him" since they still saw themselves as male and were just closeted, but then you get into the murky situation of who they were before they made the realization. Just use "they". Makes it easier.
