I've never owned a new car, I've had dozens of cars over the years from shitboxes, to project cars that has tens of thousands spent on modifications, to fairly luxurious cars that were a couple years old, but I've never had a brand new one.
I have my eye on the Golf R, speced as I'd like it is around £40k which I can afford outright, but it is a tonne of money. I could finance it with 10k down for around £375 a month for 60 months as another option, or could finance to own at around 5% APR.
I've only ever bought cars for cash till now.
I can afford it, but i'm not sure if it's worth it. It;s a great car - quick, AWD tracton, fully loaded, and reasonably reliable, and I'd be happy with it for many years.
What does /o think? Is a new car with it if you can afford it?
Xavier Green
Veeky Forums has negative opinions about buying new because they can't afford it and grapes are sour. Ultimately it boils down to how valuable your time is. If breaking down and spending an afternoon or a weekend fixing something is no big deal for you, then it's just way cheaper to get a used one for half price. Personally I think it's worth the price of new to have it new.
Eli Evans
I plan to buy new in the future. No questions about spotty maintenance, pristine condition, assured reliability, and a clean canvas to do whatever you want.
Andrew Williams
Or buy a 3 year old one in a bit with a 30% discount. Won't be much of a difference if you check it out because people like to maintain new cars well, and you can check records easily because the car is so recent. Why buy new when you can literally just verify the maintenance or not purchase it at all. People who buy cars like that can afford nicer cars so they'll be able to afford maint. too.
I got lucky in a labour violation lawsuit a few years ago and got 300k, I bought two cars both secondhand and did away with my old Suzuki dd. For 30k I got a 17k 3 year old Golf with leather and all the snazzy options, and I spent 13k on a sporty car. I'm perfectly pleased with my decision, I bet you too could get a 25-30k golf r that's maybe 3 years old and have a great time with it.
Aiden Reed
Depends. Sometimes you want a puppy to care for until the end, knowing it was all yours. sometimes you rather get it when it's an bit older and you don't mind
Benjamin Rivera
Pre certified and used is where it's at. No need to absorb the new car price.
Kayden Stewart
Unless it some sort of special edition car or trim its almost never worth buying new.
I just look on classifieds and see multiple 2017 Golf R with less then 10k miles for 85% of MSRP. Use that extra cash on modification.
Noah Rivera
yes if you value muh fee fees. If you're a logical human being new is never worth it.
Austin Smith
From a financial perspective no From a car enthusiast's yes
Jace King
Never buy a new car.Never.The average carloads nearly half its value 5 years! >Example Car:40,000/Brand new/
Car:Over the next 5 years, the value plummets to 20,000 ,And by the 8 year mark,it is usually worth about 10,000.
Also, don't get a loan or a down payment.Your investing more money than the car is worth, and putting Money into a product with rapidly decreasing value. If you already have 10K,Look at older golf models instead.Trust me,it will save you from a living hell later on in life.
Noah Nguyen
Yes,and if he has a little more,I'm sure it won't be hard to find a 2012 model.
Asher Cook
>No questions about spotty maintenance, pristine condition, assured reliability, and a clean canvas to do whatever you want.
This is whats so attractive about buying new for me.
i plan to buy a new car at some point
Ryder Wright
just buy one that has done sub 20,000km and is max 2 years old.
you'll have ALL the maintenance information due to it still being under warranty, thus you know its getting serviced at the dealer.
buy near new, not new.
i mean you can buy cars that have done 3000km and are less than 6 months old. let some other cunt take the instant $2,000 loss of value
Connor Rogers
This advice is always so stupid. Why would you pay cash for a car, take the hit in depreciation, and to top it off you take a hit in the form of inflation.
Use someone else's money and let them take most of the inflation hit. You'd have to be a stupid nignog to have bad enough credit to not get a sub 3% loan with over 20% down on a new vehicle.
Easton Robinson
The $2-5k you "save" on depreciation will just be put back into the car later when you have to do the tires, brakes, etc. The car is also worth less when you go to sell it because it's now a two owner car and it's older.
tldr: cars are depreciating assets
Justin Flores
yeah there are a few cases - dont want to repair cars and not havong to put up with the previous person's treatment of the car - wanting the latest tech - easier to get a loan on a new car rather than an old car
Jackson Gomez
A bought a new Polo GTI. I bought new because I could choose all the specs and trim plus I wanted the warranty because >VAG, also I wanted to be the one to break it in rather then have some p-player dipshit not properly seat the seals and whatever. I plan to keep it a long time so depreciation isn’t a concern, I want longevity though so maybe I went wrong, hopefully the EA888 Gen 3 is a better build than previous gens
William Lopez
buying brand new? no, I don't think its worth it. buying almost brand new? like
Jace Hill
Wrong, Ive seen endless new cars with sub 10k with busted transmissions because the retarded owners drove with a lead foot from day one. Even if you buy from a dealer, if the car has 70km or whatever, being transported from dealer to dealer not on the back of a truck, best believe the dude driving gave it the full beans on the trip.

Begone Veeky Forums we buy cars to drive and enjoy them, and anyone who buys them for financial reasons is completely missing the point
Lucas Thomas
So tl;dr with used car dealer cars with low miles, assume all the miles were hard? No shit, sherlock.
Lucas Morgan
If you only have space for one car (so no backup shitbox if your daily shits itself) and a good job that you can't afford to risk losing by losing your only method of transportation, a new car warranty with rental coverage makes good sense.
Ayden Carter
>people like to maintain new cars well Biggest lie ever. As new cars are more reliable than used ones, people get lazy with maintenance and abuse them. That's the reason used cars lost their value, because you never know how destroyed and abused the car really is, until damage starts to show a couple years later.
Wyatt Scott
>Finance
Get to buy a car way out of your budget for a way reduced price, get to hand it back with nothing to pay after a few years (as long as no damage, you have that financial agreement and haven't driven more than your allowed miles)
>Buying You get to own it at the end outright with no more "baloon payment"? People on the internet don't hate you?
Jonathan Ortiz
Yeah, no shit, but common sense isnt all that common.
Kayden Collins
40k for a slow bean shaped car? When will this meme end?
Henry Bennett
Do it. Golf R a best and it sounds like you can afford it, why not do it once in your life?
Adam White
What do you drive, enlighten us

More than you can afford, pal, the bus.

I've bought my last two cars brand new: A Cayman and now a Stinger. I'd strongly recommend buying new with a few conditions.
As follows: 1. Put it in the contract that the plastics must be left on the vehicle and the vehicle isn't to be washed by the dealer. You want a truly NEW car and the dealers will literally put swirl marks on a brand new car with their shitty detailers (usually spics).
2. Flatbed the car with it's plastics to a quality shop that does vinyl protective wraps and ceramic coatings.
3. Get a 10-year partial protective vinyl wrap over the front of the car, hood, mirrors, door-handles, and trunk's deck lid.
4. Have the entire car ceramic coated with one that is guaranteed to last 10 years. I have the wheels removed and those completely ceramic coated inside and out and the brake calipers as well.
I did that to the Cayman and it literally looks brand new after 7 years. Do all your maintenance, use quality fluids in the car from day 1, and keep up with your detailing. The car will last forever and you don't have to waste all your fucking time wrenching and repairing someone else's fucking mess. You can spend your time making money on crypto instead and buy even more new cars.
tldr: Working on cars is one of the best ways to stay perpetually poor. Buy new and take great car of it and keep it a long time.
Anthony Rivera
I've owned 3 cars in my life so far. 1 used. 2 new. Theoretically it's more cost effective to keep buying old beaters and driving them to the grave. But then that leaves you with the inconvenience of no vehicle between cars.
Theoretically on top of getting warranty protection with a new car unless you pick a lemon you are paying out the ass for basically never having to see the inside of a mechanic shop for 5 years save for routine maintenance items (unless you DIY) You also get to enjoy the fact that you are sitting in your own personal ass-groove. You know how the vehicle has been treated. However a lot of newer cars are turning into rent seeking bullshit now. All sorts of electrical shit that breaks after 5 years up to and including no longer having direct mechanical trunk releases. So if you buy a new car now don't expect to have a problem free ride for more than 5 years.
Cooper Lee
Use the 10k to buy an 8P S3 or MK5 Golf Edition 30. Get it remapped by R-tech, Revo or APR and you’ll have same power and more torque than the MK7 R. The aftermarket is huge on these so you can retrofit bits that you want.
You’ll feel so much better with the above knowing you have no finance payments and still have a decent ride.
Gabriel Morgan
did you do something to the bottom of the car or it will just rust out on you?
Jordan Cruz
>wanting a Stinger Weak b8
Isaac Edwards
if you buy something truly special, hard to get or performance vehicle, then definitely worth buying new. if you buy VAG shitbox that used car market is full of, it makes no sense unless you really, really want that car and grew some feelings for it already.
Ryder Lopez
>buys a new Stinger >complains about spics You are a spic. They're the only people stupid enough to pay for one of those shitboxes with the budget interior.
Angel Phillips
Buy a new car that seems durable enough to be a daily. Otherwise, look for used.
Jacob Gomez
Is it worth what? It's not like there are downsides to buying new.
Caleb Rodriguez
you'd be surprised how much buses cost municipalities new.
Eli Sanchez
>finance If you like throwing away money twice, sure. A 1 or 2 year old car is the best value, since it's still new enough to be ahead of any issues and costs, but way cheaper than when it's brand new. And then throw in financing on top of it.
But since you're looking at a VW, you'll probably just go for it and be a moron.
Juan Phillips
Yeah because a used car = shit that falls apart. Get a used one of a few years old, and you won't have any serious issues whatsoever, for 2/3rd the cost of a new one. And it's still the exact same car, there's literally no reason to buy new unless you have that money spare with nothing important to spend it on. Which is pretty much nobody on Veeky Forums.
Jackson Morgan
If the car you want is such a shitbox after just two years, then you're looking at the wrong cars.
Eli Reed
>5k for brake pads and tires Dude lol
Jack Gutierrez
I've had both new and used. New car was like $22K and the used only was $9000. Used car was bigger/better but it crapped out on my and in only one year I've spent more on repairs than what the car was worth. The new car was smaller/not as good but it lasted 7 years with no problems.
If you have a shitload of extra cash on hand/really car/mech savy, get a used one because you may get a good one and have no problems with it and save money (but have money on hand for repairs just in case).
If you have only enough money for a monthly payment/no extra cash on hand, get new with a warranty.
Carson Long
Veeky Forums doesn't like it because they can't but if you can, you are basically paying for peace of mind. No if ands or buts that the car is in top shape (not to mention under a new warranty) and nobody has been doing stupid shit with the car.
The last two cars I bought were used but they were both specific cars that I wanted. Was looking at a new car with the second purchase but decided against it. In the future I might buy something new; however, I will always look at the used market to see if there are any really low mileage cars that are the same (or near the same) year as the new model but have already taken the depreciation hit. Sure there is some risk that someone went full retard with the car for several months to a year or so, but it's less likely than buying a used car with 50k miles on it.
tl;dr if you want to pay extra for peace of mind and can afford it, do it. If not, look at newer used cars and go from there.
Blake Ramirez
Unless it's a reliable car like a Honda or Toyota, then it's damn worth it. I would never buy a German car brand new. I'd lease that shit and drove it like I stole it. I've had my Civic for 8 years and not one single problem. Still runs like new and still gets 28/34 mpg.
Connor Carter
I saw a Golf R under 3 years old go for $17k.
I think there are great used buys out there that pop up. Ive only ever bought less than 3 year old trade ins with less than 20k on the odometer.
They pop up but watching for them is almost a hobby and you never know what car it will be.
I think buying a new economy car or commuter is a bit silly. The plastic and parts degrade fast and go out of style fast.
I think id consider buying a car that I really loved new would be ok. Golf R is amazing car by the way, esp the Fender stereo.
I would really only buy new if you truly want the car and you plan on using it for more than commuting in traffic.
Jaxon Moore
this. the piece of mind of a warranty, free loaners, never buying tires, etc. is soooooo worth it to buy new
used is just risky and time consuming and annoying, sorry
Carson Moore
new also comes with all the latest gadgets, best mpg, best tech, free on star free oil changes free sirius radio sub
Kevin Morgan
>Golf R >£40k
dude wth lol
Luis Butler
I buy new when it makes sense and used when it makes sense. 2005 half ton gmc options and shit had 6 mi on it when i signed drove it 250000 mi on 1 trans and brakes 35k total good deal. Before that bought 92 gmc 300k sold at 450k brakes and some bushings 3000 maybe in its life great deal. The 05 was better in every way and worth every penny but i could have gone with another used at an incredible savings. Tldr: you can get buy on used but new is so nice its worth every penny.
