Canada sucks

So, basically I'm screwed

I worked for a chain of automotive repair shops as an apprentice, little about me before you judge, I'd show up early and drive the vehicles in the shop out, I'd cover shifts when they called me and someone else was sick, my only thing is I'd always take my half hour break, I am hourly so due to Ontario workplace law I thought I was entitled to a half hour break.

I've only been there 5 months but I figured taking my legally allocated break was ok long as I clocked out.

So basically I show up one day to work and my boss had already hired two newbies I was basically fired and one of the reasons he gave was my need for a break, he also listed that I seem to have bad luck his example relates to the photo

I contact the labor board and all I'm entitled is a weeks pay wtf

So basically our laws are pointless

Yeah but youre shit OP you know it

welcome to the real world

Take it as a sign and quit being a mechanic its aids job

Dont let it get you down user. Be adaptable and realize that know you get to go find another job and hoepfully find one that doesn't suck ass like this one did. Appreciate the opportunity to leave a tard convention like that.

>So basically our laws are pointless
Yes...It is an eye opener isn't it?

Yeah man, I'm 23.. Keep in mind most of my family works office jobs, with that said I'm not typical millennial I keep my phone in the locker and shit and id work nonstop until 12:00

Sucks I can't fucking sue them, I've heard of cases like this where people get thousands of dollars

>Canada
>no breaks

wait what?? this commie shithole tends to heavily favor laborers. Something is missing

What province
How long were your shifts

Is it worth your time user? Go smoke a fag, drink some whiskey and go find a better job buddy.

Join the army dude

Specialize in just one thing like panel welding, A/C, interior, wiring, paint and body, etc and make your own small business to compete with them.

Shops and even mechanic schools purposely spread your knowledge thin over a variety of things so you can't do this.

Yeah! That's what I thought.

He told me he took issue with it when he 'laid me off

Ontario, it's fucking shit here

Like 8-9 hours

I did time in the Marines in the US. Come join, you'll get US citizenship and a bretty decent job. If you don't like it you get out after 4 years and use the GI Bill like me.

>be me
>using GI Bill to attend Wayne State University
>tuition paid
>also $1770 USD deposited to my checking account once a month
>fucking rich by college standards

If he said your need for a break was the reason he fired you please get a lawyer and sue him into the ground. He's too stupid to be anyone's boss. You were past the 3 month probation period so unless he has documented real legit issues on paper that he had with you he cannot fire you and immediately hire 2 people to replace you.

dude you are either holding something from us, or you didn't explain your situation properly to the job board

because in Ontario, on a 8 hour shift you're entitled to an unpaid half hour AND 2 paid 15 min breaks, afaik, might be different for other industries

Been trying in Ontario you need a registered training agreement to go to school, so far no one is willing to sign that until probation, which is bullshit considering it doesn't cost them anything or stick you with them basically putting my school off since I was supposed to go in the spring.

I'm at this point debating if I should just pay for my own schooling and quit trying to get it from these crooks dealerships are the worst

Actually no fuck that, contact the MOL and ask them for advice.

for CERTAIN industries I meant

also

ontario.ca/document/your-guide-employment-standards-act/hours-work#section-0

lawyer up and sue

Yea that's why I suggested it to that guy. I too am a Mellow Belleau Woodsmen. EAS in 2 months after 5 years and am basically set for life now

You fucked up that car bro. Maybe you deserved a firing.

It is a pretty fuckin sweet gig. Navy payed for my college and taught me to fly, life is good.

Swingin with the wing? haha. Yeah its a nice life. Although I am tired of fucking school. Prolly gunna apply to Detroit Police after this semester.

>court fees
>lawyer fees
>wasting time in court when you could be spending time finding a new job
>no guarantee to "thousands of dollars"
>high risk low reward lawsuit
You'd be lucky to net a few hundred bucks after legal fees IF you win.

Just start applying for a new job.

Naw dude! He legit did it as a layoff he told me exactly

user, I'm sorry I have to let you go I meant to tell you yesterday

I ask why

Well there isn't hours right now, that's why I had you painting, also I find you're in the office too much I don't know if its bad luck or not

I ask like what

Like that stripped drain plug last week

Ok but why me I can't control that?

Well if you notice nobody else takes a lunch like you do, they eat while they work and it's not productive

Go to your car man it's cold

I don't remember exactly how it went down I was in such shock but that was basically the extent of the conversation

>Navy payed for my college and taught me to fly
Top wut
I thought you had to be an officer in order to be eligible for flight training and pilot commissioning.

Also!! That car came in like that, I wanted to show the customer but they had this stupid rule that the techs couldn't talk to the customer.

So before I pulled it out leaving him needing a drain pan I thought it might be best to explain to the customer the situation

employmentlaw101.ca/01-wrongful-dismissal/

Did you get 2 weeks pay user?

>Belleau Woods
>The wing
Nigga I'm in the fighting 5th, the Presidents personal battalion. Same here though I joined in 2013 with no skills whatsoever and an associates degree. I went to school and learned how to soon wrenches solder and wire but more importantly troubleshoot and read a manual. Worked in a bay with mechanics for a year and cross trained on engines and shit and then 3 little peace time deployments and gate guard to pad my stats for law enforcement after I get out. 1 semester from having my bachelor's (all free thanks to tuition assistance), already in the hiring process with the sheriff's dept and haven't even touched the GI bill. If it doesn't work out my wife's boss at the dealership said they'll hire me on as a lube tech then send me through there line tech school for free. Life is good

Might be an ROTC guy or naval academy scholarship. Uncle same covered his schooling then he commissioned and went pilot.

most 5 year contracts indicate someone joined with a winger job that had a long MOS school.

And why Sheriff? Dont you need to start in corrections making like $17/hr?

>That car came in like that
So what happened?

1 week, plus the week i worked

800 bucks doesn't cover school

Nope most of the sheriff's dept around here split there table of organization now for law enforcement side and corrections side. That allows them to hire cheap high school grad 18 year olds who can't legally carry a handgun yet on duty (there's no need since they work in jail) and skimp out on half the training costs since they don't have to teach them weapons or 4th amendment search and seizure shit nor driving. Meanwhile of you get hired on the Law Enforcement side the standards are much tougher the academy longer and the lay better

Yeah same in the States and they take that seruously here. I've had employers give me shit about it and I'd be like, hey I've got the Dept of Labor on speed dial, let's see what they say and that would shut them up. I was a good worker though otherwise I know they would fire me and say it was for some other reason, I was just a stickler for taking a lunch break.

If you can prove that the guy laid you off for taking your 1/2 hour unpaid break then you have an easy case bud.

Fuck, I wish Monroe Country Sheriff was like that.

It left not being touched, since the customer didn't want the repair.

That's what I thought, but apparently not

Who told you not?

Whay state is that in? See I think here nobody wants to be a police officer anymore with all the political turmoil and whatnot so they had to make it more enticing. I joined the LAPD in 2011 and it took over a year to get hired since there were billions of applicants. Now it's taking like 2 months

Michigan, I'm thinking of doing Detroit Police just for the fun and excitement of hood rat shit. State Troopers are the best (highest standards, best pay and benefits, best training and equipment) but they seriously just handle traffic. I know a few Troopers and all they do is traffic.

Tbh you don't even gotta do the full 4 years if you do it right. I did 30 months and made 90k my first year out of the navy at 21

Even after probation period, your employer can fire you for any reason...
In Ontario, employer is not required to pay you for your 15 min breaks...
If you take some time and see whats in the employment regs, you'd be quite surprised at some of the shit that is legal...

Eh I'm doing it because I love the program. Computer Science is fun as hell to me except for the Calculus.

It's the same in California the CHP basically just causes traffic on the freeways shopping people in the car left and making them merge across 6 lanes during rush hour to pull them over to the right shoulder. LAPD is where the action is at. I'm joining a smaller county sheriff's for a nice split down the middle of rural and urban policing with a nice budget. Kek I almost joined Detroit PD in 2011 too they were hurting so hard they were offering like 80 grand relocation bonuses for qualified applicants. Apply online do all your stuff over the phone and email, fly in once for the polygraph, physical fitness, medical exam and final interview and then BAM the city council cuts you a check for 80 grand to move all your shit to Detroit and probably pay like a few months rent up front.

Sorry for all the typos I'm phone posting and had quite a bit of tequila and Mezcal last night

first job i had i was entitled to a 15 minute break, i only ever took 5 and did overtime every time it was available

you gotta make yourself appear invaluable or shit like this happens, even if the work is child's play

I meant 4 years of military. 30 months gets you 90% GI bill still....though after 4 years out I still don't have a degree because I smoke too much pot

Whys everyone from michigan but MI meets always fall through

Wow, yeah that $20/hr is hard to swallow though. Talking less than 40k/year. They have "incremental pay raises" and a patrol officer makes max 51k but I don't know if that incremental raise is like +20c/hr once a year ya know? And Detroit is notorious for fucking officers. An officer was injured badly while off duty and they didn't cover him medically.

Yeazuz fuck all that noise. I'm looking at a little over 50k starting with phenomenal benefits and retirement package in a place with lower cost of living than the rest of the state and the pay is upwards of 80k after just 5 years. Also have one of the best police unions so you can't get screwed by the city/county. More pay faster for graduates and veterans too. The max out is like 105k for patrol here after 10. LAPD starts at like 70k but maxes out at less and raises are slower. No kids yet so I'm fine with starting at 50 and working up.

>Even after probation period, your employer can fire you for any reason...

Unless it violates the employment standards act. Such as firing someone for taking their unpaid 30 minute meal break as outlined below.

ontario.ca/document/your-guide-employment-standards-act-0/hours-work

An employee must not work for more than five hours in a row without getting a 30-minute eating period (meal break) free from work. However, if the employer and employee agree, the eating period can be split into two eating periods within every five consecutive hours. Together these must total at least 30 minutes. This agreement can be oral or in writing.

Meal breaks are unpaid unless the employee's employment contract requires payment. Even if the employer pays for meal breaks, the employee must be free from work in order for the time to be considered a meal break.

Welcome to adulthood. Sucks, doesn't it?

Fuck suing. Get a new job, don't waste time. Did you get fired from your career? No, it's a shit-tier job. Just find another one

>labor board
You should have contacted a lawyer

>Fuck yea socialism!
>wait

How are those health insurance payments?

Yeah the one thing I like about DPD though is they'll pay for the 6 month achademy and pay you $15/hr while you go (peanuts I know, but helps slow the bleed of cash while I'm going). After you do 2 years you can move on. So I can do 2 years at DPD and not have paid for my achademy and also have Detroit Police experience on my resume. So I could probably walk into any department I want. Go to Kalamazoo or Canton. They start at 50 and go upwards very fast.

Hey OP you know filing small claims is fairly simple and you don't need a lawyer right? You can even file it online, just make damn sure you have your shit together.
attorneygeneral.jus.gov.on.ca/english/courts/scc/

welcome to being a mechanic.

im in Alberta and apprenticed as a mechanic when i was 19, i learned everything the old school grit way and got maybe 45 minutes a break a day if that when i was entitled to 90 minutes. especially back then it was a hard trade to get into so i worked my fucking ass off, especially because the apprenticeship was offered to me, i didnt ask for it. the main problem is usually especially small shops like i worked at, youre technically your own contractor under the company name so the owner can get away with doing that kind of stuff. its just to be accepted in the trade

theres a reason every old timer that has been a mechanic for 30-40 years will tell you to go back to school after your apprenticeship and get a desk job, its a tough job to stay for the long run. i stayed for my 4 year apprenticeship and got my Jman and redseal diplomas then stayed 2 more years as a journeyman and dipped out and got a completely different job

do i miss making $30+ an hour? yeah but the stress wasnt worth it at all

i wouldnt know, im healthy

Your an apprentice, more than likely they rotate through apprentices every six months. Its cheap labor, this is more so for independent garages.

>catches a cold
>goes bankrupt

Day of the Rake when?

>I was basically fired and one of the reasons he gave was my need for a break

well working at canadian tire is garbage to begin with. go find a real mechanics job in a non cuck province

>level 1 shop sweeper
>need muh break
hahahahahahahahaha
Come to alberta and work a man's job, and see what happens when you try and take a break.

Become an electrician

Mechanic from Vancouver here. Get out of this trade and go into Heavy Equipment. The demand is high, the work is easier (this surprised me) and every shop will pay for your schooling and you can pick anywhere you want to work. Basically I got certified in automotive and was making 26$/hr after like 5 years of working at the same place and being the best mechanic there. I looked into Heavy Duty and got a job at 40$/hr (Minimum start rate is 20$/hr for first year apprentice) plus 6$/hr to my pension and full benefits (Union shop, most non-union shops pay more money but don't do pension). The stuff I work on takes a long time to do anything, so an oil change might take 2 hours or replacing something on the engine might take 4 hours and if they need it done you will be given lots of overtime.

The main reason I switched was money but the fact that I don't need to clean up after each job and test drive the vehicle (I do off-road equipment, NOT TRANSPORT TRUCKS), I can wipe off some grease from my hands and hop into the equipment without worrying about getting a small dirt stain on the floormats.

Do the switch now and don't look back. You also will need about half the number of tools you would for working on cars (I don't even use 3/4 of the tools I have).

>"You seem to have bad luck".
Surely this is not an actual reason you were fired, right?

> Eat while they work

What the FUCK kind of a half-assed cheapo workplace was that?

By workspace laws in the entire western hemisphere you are not allowed to eat in a workshop where metal is being grinded/welded/painted and where oils and other chemicals are abound.

user you go to your fucking union and you raise Hell

If you are not in a union then I have zero sympathy for you, they would take care of all your problems and run the case for you

>By workspace laws in the entire western hemisphere you are not allowed to eat in a workshop where metal is being grinded/welded/painted

You don't understand how unfair some places are when it is a "right to work" USA state. In those states, they can fire you for any reason other than one that violates the Bill of Rights and you are the one that has to prove they are violating the Constitution. Therefore, if you insist on your full legal rights like break times, paid overtiime, etcetera, you can end up fired if there are plenty of other applicants that want your job.

Sure, you have rights. But if you use them, you'll get your hours cut, demoted, or fired.

Nigger what? You've been listening to union reps too much.

Lawyer up, state, federal and local laws still apply.

I am a Sask HD road tech. Ill write my journeyman this coming fall.
>This guy is right
>Don't work for dealerships
>Work in the field in a service truck
>I worked 5 months last year and made $92,000

>land of the free

>used to load for UPS
>10 hour shift, one 10 minute break
>never took it before no one would cover for you
I know how you feel OP, but truth is, if the employer is that iffy about something like a break, don't work there.

this

OP make the switch, you won't regret it. And if you are willing to relocate to the oil fields of Alberta (ideal if you don't have a family right now) then you can make more money than you can handle and you can actually afford to buy a house in Vancouver or Toronto. I missed out on that opportunity but I'm making double the money for half the work an automotive tech would be doing. And if you get a service truck you will spend half your day driving, half your day working and start making crazy overtime.

Equipment is also a lot easier to work on and because there are only a handful of companies you don't need to be familiar with so many different ones. A lot of times a fleet will only have Caterpillar or John Deere and you get really good at working on them. Oh and you also don't get customers going "my husband is a mechanic and says this repair should not cost 40$ it should cost 30$ and it didn't make this weird sqeak until after you replaced the brake light"

I had people constantly telling me to change careers when I had just got my automotive certification (Red Seal) but I stayed at my shop and barely got a raise. Now that I've changed my only regret is not doing it sooner.

Play the race card if you can.

>reddit spacing
Stop this shit.

>reddit spacing
what is this

That's what happens when a shithole becomes flooded with more people than jobs. If you aren't willing to work through a break they'll find two who can.

>And if you are willing to relocate to the oil fields of Alberta
dude wat
Have you been living under a rock? Work has picked up a little here but there's still tons of experienced guys out of work. And OP would be coming in green as fuck
There seems to be a weird trend I've noticed where well-meaning people usually from Ontario and the Maritimes have this super outdated info on the job market here in alberta and think that it's still 2011 and anyone with a pulse can make $30/hour. I'm not telling people to not come here but at least do some research so you don't get a rude surprise if you do move here expecting a job

I know it's not as good as it was, but if you can land a job at 30-40/hr (You would need your 3rd year of training) and get your certification then you have the chance to move to one of the better companies (I have had two friends do this, but they went there as 4th year apprentices) and start making better money. Northern BC also has a lot of good paying mechanics jobs but the safest scenario is to get into a shop locally and finish your schooling before relocating.
