Engine Swapped Cars

Do any of you guys own swapped cars?
whats your opinion on engine swapping a car for street or daily use?
p

Depends on the swap. Going from an inferior engine to a more superior engine of the same type, such as a 20V 4AGE in an AE86 or a 350 swap into a 305 Camaro, I’m all for. However, swapping a completely different type of engine will drastically change how the car drives and performs. You might hate a new car if you lived it before the swap

>daily use
Depends on what you want. Better fuel economy, more speed, just daily car from point a to b.

Yes. The previous owner of my E21 swapped a new M10 engine of same displacement in, likely because of mileage. However, something more significant is that he used a 5 speed instead of the original 4 speed, nice to have that extra gear. Since it already isn't original i'm considering an S14 swap

Literally no car has came out of the factory perfect

This is b8

I'm considering swapping mine. Different series, same manufacturer.

>look at gauges
>crash and die

What a stupid design2

The mclaren F1 and carrera gt make strong arguments against your point

...

Yes, an S52 swapped E30, converted to OBD1 and BAR'ed in California. My advice is that if you plan on dailying a swapped car, be sure to rebuild the new engine before putting it in. Costs a bit more upfront, but if you address any issues with the engine (in my case, securing the oil pump nut) and replace any worn bits, you'll significantly extend the life of the engine and save some headache later on. As you posted an E30, I would recommend swapping in an M/S5x engine or an M30 as they are both extremely well-documented swaps and virtually all the swap parts you need can be purchased inexpensively. Since my swap, I've enjoyed having nearly twice the original power of my car, better milage, and better sound and I know I have at the very least another 200k miles on the engine before I can expect issues.

tl;dr They're good if you do them right and ideally if they don't totally change the way your car drives. Try to stick to swaps that have been done a number of times before and you'll have a better time

I did it. Motor was too crazy in shelby so I detuned and swapped an AT. Better now not scary

A KLZE swapped Probe GT, and a KLZE swapped MX6, and a 13BT swapped RX7 GXL. So, yes. But, they aren't the most interesting swaps since mechanically they are bolt ins.

There is literally nothing you would change on those cars?

did you do the swap yourself?

None of these busriders have swapped shit. They can't even drive let alone afford brakes. No swapped shit here...

I'll take this bait.

How about an old-school swap?

engine swaps are illegal

I once swapped a 351 Windsor into a 1991 Mazda B2200. It was pretty scary to drive right up until the rear tires actually hooked up and the rear end jumped forward and ruined the transmission.

If he lives in a 3rd world country he's probably right

Swapped an S54 into my E46 touring. Fantastic for dailying and and drives no different than any well-sorted E46 M3.
Varies state to state on year of car and engine, but I don't think there's a single state where engine swaps as a whole are illegal.

>m3 touring

Noice. Got a facelifted m3-swapped e46 coupe myself, but I kinda want a touring too.

>1997 Celica GT with the shitty 5S-FE
>found 3S-GTE out of an MR2 Turbo that was wrecked for a good price ($900 including harness, transmission, all turbo accessories, ECU, etc)
>pretty much bolts right in using the original mounts
>got a front mount intercooler and some piping
>has been a blast to drive ever since

> Intercooler that size for a B series
You're doing it wrong.

>doesn't think I can heatsoak this size IC
>implying this isn't my new bumper

only if they stay in the family and the layout remains the same.
>RA28 Celica + 1UZ-FE

Sweet, the touring is fantastic but retrofitting M body panels is a nightmare in the front end since the fenders mount differently sedan to coupe (you know how it is with the rear fenders).
What are the specs on your front wheels, if you're stock body?

>he put a honda motor in a honda

Yeah, I used the narrower non-m control arms and kept the outside appearance stock for simplicity. Currently running 225/40/R18s all around. A bit narrow in the rear, but it allows tire rotation.

Power steering and stupid ceramic clutch.

Ah, that would explain that. I have M control arms and I'm running 245/40r18 square but I get super jelly of actual M3s running 275 square and up.
In the front I have maybe 1mm of wheel clearance with the shock.
Yours looks great tho, very very OEM. Mine has a similar look when I put my X5 wheels on.

I put a big engine in my ranger and destroyed the transmission

>But, they aren't the most interesting swaps since mechanically they are bolt ins.
These are the best swaps, things normies would think are factory

Thanks, yours looks good too. Tested 255/30/r19s in the rear, but the wheel scraped the muffler and barely had any clearance to the fender, so I sold them and went for the 225s. Considering 245s later.

Yes, with some help from friends.

M30 into an E30 is also bolt in and looks stock

Going from a 4.3 to a 5.7 in my C1500. It will only net me a 30hp gain, but mostly doing it for the sound and oomph. Tired of the 325K V6. Been good though.
I guess in my case: I’m doing the swap because i have the motor, it’s a good experience, and I have the know how, but mostly for the extra 2 cylinders.

>tfw no car friends to help me do a swap

That's strange, the setup of that pic was 245/265 which I've now dropped, but I could fit 295s in the rear if I wanted to. Maybe wagons/sedans are different from coupes back there.
If not, my setup was 18x9.5 et58 with a 12mm spacer which gave me some fender wheel gap and lots of suspension clearance.
Me either homie, it's totally possible you just gotta get super informed and just dive in. It's a lot harder to envision when you're looking at forum threads and you don't have the car and motor in front of you.

Now you just need to find a wrecked GT4 and swap in the drivetrain.

I'm all about the stock look. When you can double the factory power with junkyard parts and make it appear stock it's even better.

I think it was because my muffler has kinda bad fit, combined with et25-ish rims and my coilovers being adjusted to low. Rims was 10" wide, so I think at least 285 should've been doable with the right et.

What would you change on the McLaren F1? 25 years later it's still the world's fastest naturally aspirated supercar

any reasons against having a reputable shop doing an engine swap for you?
I don't think I will have the time or space to do it myself after I graduate. I will have saved up a bit beforehand so money wont be an issue

>any reasons against having a reputable shop doing an engine swap for you?

doing it yourself to learn how and also the car inside and out. it doesn't take a genius to swap a car.

They will prob go the cheapest possible route and not replace worn stuff etc.
Does it have carbon cupholders?

Having the time and space is the most important thing.

There are speed shops that have some engine swaps down to a science and they have a listed price for it. These are the best places to go to. Other specialty places will be flying blind a little bit and you may get a few curve balls in the process. Most places will be flying completely blind and you should not take it to them.

...

I put a LS9 in my twingo

don't ask how

im at work now but i'll post pics when i get home

Oh yeah I've swapped.
Low 12s neon, stock save for meth

...

Having gauges by the handbrake can't be very functional

I've been trying but they seem quite rare. I'd need the transmission, driveshaft, differential, rear axles, rear subframe, and I think the rear wheel hubs.

this.

if your going to do swaps do swaps that you can find documentation on if this is going to be your daily. Nothing is worse than swapping some exotic engine into a car with zero documentation online about it to help you, or other people that have done it before you can ask questions.

This is why ls swaps are so common, they have been swapped in nearly everything and have a huge aftermarket for swap mounts, oil pans, intakes etc.

>NOT putting a b18c or k20 in your EK
kek, do you even honda bro?

>m bimmer is just a normal bimmer with a bigger engine

no man, non m bimmers are boring luxobarges that are slow as fuck
M bimmers are actually sports cars.
Just cause you increase the hp number doesnt make it an M you retarded fucking brainlet.
Turn a corner once in a while see what I mean.

My mrs outbrakes it.

>want s2k engine in e36
>tfw good condition running e36 costs less than 500 here
>tfw s2k engine costs 5k here
could get an e90 330 for that price.

Hahhhahagagavavavavvaghabbahhbaahabahahhshahahahhahahhahahhhahaggagagagsggavs
Oh shit you serious?

EZ30D Swapped Forester here
Unfortunately, I bought the car with the engine swapped by a shop previously, but I've definitely picked up on a few things from the build.
Sort your shit with the ECU. My car still thinks it's an auto, and it only works because of some black magic with a neutral safety switch put in to the trans. Does all sorts of weird shit on a cold start, as well as the revs dip a bunch when I slow down in gear. Point of that rambling is that if you're doing it, try to do it right and sort out your issues. Car would run a fuckton better with an aftermarket unit, as well as getting a proper tune, but shit happens

Got off track there, but another thing is to not try and rush the build. Guy must have run out of money when he did the swap, because they neglected to fully wire in the 02 sensors. Car runs rich, but it runs because it's open loop (the one that doesn't really use outside data) so it doesn't need the data to not shit the bed. Next stop is WRX brakes and to finish wiring those fuckers though

I put an lq9 (higher compression gm truck 6.0) into my ls1 firebird, if that counts. Everything is externally the same dimensions-wise and all the accessories and sensors bolted right up. Didn't have to change anything I didn't want to. Did it because the ls1 hydrolocked, went iron for the strength and cid.

Do swaps tend to affect anything else in the car, like accessories, gauges, electronics, etc?

I find it depends on your harness, the new ECU, etc. sometime you can run in compatibility issues, but it is very dependent on what you want to do. Just a lot of fiddling and homework

Depends on the swap and the amount of effort that the person did it put into it.

How much was that lq? Are they still reasonable? You see people wanting $4k+ for low mileage ones now

950 plus 450 shipping to midwest from an lkq yard in florida. 40k miles on it. I got 5k mile l92 heads (rectangular port) shipped for 450 from the same yard.
4k, fuck I should resell engines.

Here's a list of the lower mile picks.

how much would an s14 cost you?
why not an f series or k?

Why not S5x? I haven't been able to find an S14 anywhere

I swap shitty gas motors and Ford diesels with 5.9 Cummins. I do it to trucks and tractors. The 5.9 is easy to work on and there are a lot of accessable adapter kits. I want to drop a cat into pickup just need to find a way to fit it in the engine bay.

Is that an LTD?

as long as its kept within the family no problems.

I mean if you knew the power output was going to get that big you shouldve looked into a transmission that can handle it

I don't want to fuck up the weight distribution too much, an S52/s54 would be too front heavy and i'd have to mess with the suspension

S14s go for around $4-12k where I am depending on condition

I want to swap my engine for an older version

I have got two...
a 1989 E30 Touring with a M30B35 engine as a daily with towbar stuff.
And a 1978 Ford Escort mk2 with a cosworth YB engine for sundays and track

Watching do you guys think about engine swaps into old Italian sportscars/supercars? Been wanting to restomod a detomaso pantera. I'm familiar with lsxs and wouldn't feel bad considering it was powered by an old ford anyway.

Got nothing against it if the original engine is fubar or a pita to restore, but kinda weird it's working fine and puts out reasonable power.

I've been considering purchasing a fox body Mustang and dropping a 2.3 EcoBoost in. Haven't seen many people do it yet, but it sounds like a cool project.

Are you from North America? Isnt the 2JZ-GTE way more practical to find parts for than a 1JZ-GTE?

What's the legality of engine swaps when it comes to declaring the mileage on the odometer? Or does it really not matter if I'm not looking to resell the car?
>e.g. my car has 144,xxx on the clock but I want to swap in an engine + transmission that has only 70k

I have a 66 mustang with a cosworth YB on my list of future builds...

how light can you get a foxbody?
