You can give it a try then. Just make sure your planes are close at hand to fly there quickly, because even with modern AA your boats will take heavy damage very quickly unless they can intervene.

If you want to neuter the British, keep engaging them until you sink their carriers. With them gone your navy might feasibly even be able to beat the British navy long-term, or at least it might give you some time to produce carriers of your own. Although realistically I'd have said you should've already begun research in that direction if you wanted to have top-of-the-line carriers ready by '46 or so, but whether or not you need them really depends on what your goals for the campaign are.
