When is it ok to switch to 3x5?
I'm at 1pl8 squat now doing 5x5

3x5 isn't enough volume

So, when is it viable to switch to 3 sets instead of 5 then?

Alright, 1pl8 is, for me as a beginner, pretty taxing right now.

Because SS is impossible to mess up, and beginners are really, really good at messing things up.
For instance: you were doing 5x5 under 1pl8. That's a mistake, you can go up much faster doing 3x5 and then switching to the Texas method when that stops working (which may not occur until 3 pl8).

Stronglifts tells you to switch to 3x5 once you have stalled (failed at least one set three workouts in a row) twice.
1st stall: drop 10% and work back up
2nd stall: drop 10%, switch to 3x5 and work back up
3rd stall: drop 10%, switch to 3x3 and work back up
4th stall: drop 10%, switch to 1x3 and work back up
5th stall: find a new program
This is full proof. I was always able to unstall after deloading in this manner when I was running Stronglifts.
