I know a lot of guys who play, and I used to play seriously myself. While I would say the proportion of normal/decent dudes who play is higher than expected, a lot of people who play are either fat or skelly neckbeard losers. The other thing you need to control for is if you play competitively at all, you're seeing people who are better. Neckbeard guys are typically bad at everything, regardless of how much time they spend at the activity.
When I used to play GP qualifiers it would be about 50% nerds losers, but once I went to the TCG club in university which had "for fun" in its rules, and it was full of neckbeards who sucked at the game despite knowing every card and every rule. I never went back to that club.

I started playing yugioh again recently. The new rules are weird and I'm the most in shape person at the shops when I go by a mile. A lot of people I play do a double take when I sit at the table in front of them and immediately look at my arms and shoulders. I may try to learn the rules to Magic tho just for a change.
