Unless you literally mean a 'pre-workout', eat some complex carbs and sugars. Fats may make you feel drowsy and it's not like muscles are built during the workout, so filling yourself with proteins is pretty pointless, and you need a long lasting energy.

i usually eat a CLIF bar and have milk + whey powder 30 mins pre workout
