OP it'll seem impossible at first. Your brain gets uncomfortable when put into situations that trigger a sensitized response to porn-like images in anticipation of the thing. Normally you make yourself comfortable by satisfying the addiction but you're not going to and you'll get used to it and ultimately it'll feel better.

I can't confirm this - I tried abstaining from both for a year, and then I spent a year masturbating with imagination only and it was only the year I abstained from both at the same time that I saw really dramatic results.

All the evidence I've seen points to masturbation being a stress reaction: it increases when animals are trapped and stressed and decreases when they're allowed to roam around freely (like other stress-reactions such as pulling out hair, hitting head against the wall etc.). I've seen no evidence that you need to do it and a lot of evidence that it's harmful esp. in terms of overloading the motivational pathway in the brain (which is otherwise known as addiction).

All the arguments in favour of it that I have ever seen turned out to be either not backed up by any evidence or actually contradicted by the evidence (like saying it reduces prostate cancer risk when it actually increases it for men in their 20s and 30s - or saying your body needs to ejaculate etc.).

Nofap is not essentially about fapping, it's about motivational pathway in the brain being overloaded by overstimulation of dopamine. Because behaviours which stimulate dopamine become compulsive it's easy to end up stuck repeating those behaviours. Most of the things which stimulate dopamine were rare in the wild (sugar, salt, fat, new sexual partners, even sex was not something you could do all day) but now with technology we've made those things more accessible and our brains end up overdosing on it.

If you want results, sort out every aspect of dopamine stimulation in your life - not only masturbating, but also video-games, anything involving "intermittent reinforcement" which is when something is only rewarding part of the time (internet forums are a typical example of this - every now and then a funny or interesting thread will come along but it's unpredictable) because the brain is set up to focus on unpredictable parts of the environment - even spending a lot of time focusing on something which is an issue in your life, like how you have no friends/no relationship, or your body is too skinny or not skinny enough, or whatever it is - if it makes you unhappy it stimulates dopamine. This is why Buddhism is about reducing desire or "attachment", because like other religions it's about healing the mind - ie. "take no thought for tomorrow, the evil of today is sufficient".
