I have no passion for my work (controller team at big bank)
For reference I'm already 32, so something that doesn't require a ton of extra schooling would be ideal.
My buddy (34) is working on his health degree--most likely clinical rehab or whatever it's called--and has expressed interest in starting a gym with me.
Are gyms with non-planet fatness model even viable? How much start up is needed?
Becoming a trainer is an option but I've heard the money is shit there (as in $9/hr)
We live in upstate ny so the market isn't a big guy (for us). That will be a huge factor as well.

Im studying law. Basically evey lawyer I know is or was a disaster, so Im guessing with a little discipline and effort I can make tons o cash.
Thomas King
Google states 10-50k start up but I'm not sure if that would be for a typical normal gym, an oly one, etc
Definitely less than I was expecting, but profits would still need to be enough to support 2 owners
Carson Scott
Thread is asking for careers that involve fitness, not careers fitizens have. I already make decent $ as a pseudo-cpa
Jack Allen
Arguably any military career is a fitness career or at least it should be. It doesn't include deadlifts so it's not my first choice, but is the choice I chose.
Aiden Reyes
I'm too old for that
Plus I can't stand people that have been in the military
Jason Rivera
G4P is the one and only truely Veeky Forums profession
Evan Ross
>Prime of your life/health >physical peak >"too old for that"
Get the fuck out of here with that shit. Tom Brady is a fucking NFL legend at 38
Ayden Evans
I am a "wellness coordinator"
basically I try to get fat employees to not be fat, so the company can lower healthcare costs.
Since teaching fat people to not be lazy is next to impossible, I pretty much just hold workouts 3x a day and browse Veeky Forums.
Jack Rodriguez
Completely irrelevant. They don't take people onto the military at 32
In what kind of facility? Pay? Credentials?
Adrian Brown
>Facility Shitty on site gym, mostly dumbells, and few of those crappy 100# gold gym vinyl weight sets.
>Pay I make over 100k
>Credentials Nothing fitness related. I am a CPA by education. My credentials were being fit, and complaining to the right people about our lack of health program,
David Roberts
I work at UPS and it makes me contemplate suicide daily
Connor Rodriguez
Wtf I want exactly this. What do you mean by "our"? You do this job at a company you were previously doing normal work for?
Jonathan Morales
I'm glad I got dicked over by not being old or a veteran. There was a time when I though 17/hr was a ton of money
Bentley Parker
yes, I worked in the risk management department, basically I evaluated insurance contracts and cost analysis on insurance policies.
So I worked up a proposal for lowering our health insurance costs (The WHO says ever 1 spent on physical activity results in $3.20 saved in health care costs)
The decision makers weren't sold enough to go out and hire a trainer or anything for this, so I proposed someone from management do it, which they decided to make me do it (I did plant the bug of interest in their ear).
After the first 6 months, there was a 33% decrease in absenteeism from the employees that participated.
So I got a raise from 60k to about 110k plus bonuses. Pretty cushy job now, mostly involving trying to teach fats to stop being fat. Every once in a while someone wants to do some actual lifting, and I help with that, but mostly just "bootcamp" style exercise classes, so that I can get their heart rate 130+ for 30/40 minutes.
Adam Rogers
Nice. Grats. My work already has an on-site gym with lame ass boot camp classes, unfortunately. Maybe I can shop this idea around though.
Julian Cox
Nice mang. My dad and I went together into opening a small little studio gym. I do small group weightlifting classes. Basically throw beginners into SS + accessories and teach them basic nutrition. It's a cushy job.
Samuel Scott
Square footage? Number of members?
Tyler Ramirez
Actually you can join the U.S. military as long as your 39 years or younger
Michael Collins
Really small. 650 sqft or something along those lines. Enough room for a double squat rack and a half rack plus floor space for deads, etc.
Just getting started so only got 5 people right now, but it'll start growing soon especially since everyone is seeing results. I can only train 5 people at a time with the space I have and even that's kind of pushing it. But group training is a good way to boost profits.
Thomas Parker
Seems like it would be good for margins, but to replace my full time work I think I'd need more volume than that
Jace Price
I get out in less than 2 years and I can't fucking wait. People in the military are such tools
Juan Turner
What shift do you work? I work preload/air driver and just listen to podcasts all day erryday to keep any negative thoughts away
Nathan Myers
Well, assuming best possible scenario: You could work 8 hours a day, 6 days a week. Classes could be 1.5 hr sessions, 3 days a week. That would yield around 50 unique clients a month. Our prices are currently (stupidly low) at 240 a month for group classes. But with 50 people that's still 12k a month.
Theres not much overhead for a gym especially one this small. Just rent and utilities which isn't bad. I'm the only employee so no money loss there.
Obviously you'd have to find and keep 50 unique clients which is the real struggle. But if you figure that out (referral system, etc) there's a lot of money to be made.

how do I incorporate Veeky Forumsness into my job as a software developer
I want to make it aesthetic
Christopher Hughes
This is the most based thing I can think of dude lol
Nathan King
What about insurance? What's your liability running you
Thomas Wright
>I pretty much just hold workouts 3x a day and browse Veeky Forums. >make 110k a year
Dude I swear, it's so crazy how like everyone on Veeky Forums, no matter what board, no matter what setting, always seem to have six figure and up jobs where they basically do nothing all day!
Lincoln Evans
Can't remember off top of my head but it was surprisingly affordable. No sexual harassment insurance though so can't finger Chad in the shower unfortunately. No homo.
Ian Turner
Is physical therapist a Veeky Forums job? Seems like it would be
Carter Bell
wouldn't say I do nothing, My first class is at 5 am, my last is 6 pm. Currently 3x a week, soon 4x.
While I am not the busiest during work hours, my days are long as fuck.
And 110k for a CPA (my educational background) isn't super high at all. I just enjoy this more because I don't always have to stare at a computer screen all day.
Granted I am usually doing research on new exercises, getting people to follow programs, etc while I browse Veeky Forums. (which is exactly what I am doing now). Or doing individual "consulting" about how to get people to just stop eating so fucking much (which I will be doing in about 30 minutes). And yes I am available in the office 7 days a week via appointment.
Jayden Gonzalez
Not that user, I am But it isn't that bad, everyone signs a liability waiver, so your only exposure would be in the case of negligence (aside from sexual harassment).
And as long as you are taking care of your equipment and it is a well known / common exercise, they are going to have a tough time proving negligence in the case of an injury during exercise.
Nathan Bell
I doubt you'll make any money from fitness, unless you're popular and / or good at scamming.
Take a realistic job and keep lifting as a hobby.
John Ross
Preload. about to quit when school starts back in two weeks
Logan Gomez
What the fuck are you on about? There are at least half a dozen people in this thread who are talking about working jobs which pay well under 6 figures and they are busy all day.
Xavier Collins
Be a fitness nature guide. Work out in the the outdoors, and have hot rich lady clients hire you to take them outside and do a couple of burpee's in their hikes. You have a lot of beautiful country in upstate New York, yeah? I'm guessing the gym market is oversaturated. You might go over to Veeky Forums and see if they can offer advice on start up costs, or if you want to rough estimate yourself, look into rent per square foot in the area, insurance, equipment, employees, wages, more insurance, competition, and that shit. Honestly, I think they ones that make money on the small front are those "boot camp" things where people bust their asses in classes, and you bring in people that way. But I'm not entirely sure. I still like my "nature boot camp" class ideas, like halfway between hiring a nature guide and halfway between boot camp, but not sure how that'd work out.
Isaac Martin
You have to find a place where the market isn't smothered. There are a lot of gyms, it's a decently stable business. Check competitors' rates and facilities. Try to offer something they can't either by being more affordable, more accessible (hours/location), or by having better facilities in general. Read some books on business/finance and run some numbers. Don't quit your job until you get revenue going.
