Sup Veeky Forums, I'm fat and currently losing weight. What's the point of lifting if I won't gain any muscle at all cuz I'm on a defecit? I used to lift a couple years ago so idk if the whole noob gains thing will work again. Should I just stick with cardio?

What? Just get your proteins, keep your negative caloric intake and hit the gym 3/4 times a week, you'll build muscle.

I thought you couldn't gain any weight on a defecit? Thus you cannot build any muscle while losing weight at the same time?

This is true for people who have been lifting for a while. When starting out your body is so untrained that it will adapt eve at a calorie defecit.

This is part of the effect known as "noob gains". Lift now as you lose fat, so there will be a nice body to go on with underneath it. If you don't, you'll be less fat but probably still look bad and end up having to start from "skinny fat".

Plus, the muscle you gain will make fat loss easier simply as lean muscle mass takes more calories to maintain than fat mass, meaning you'll be using more calories just existing and your weight loss will go better.

Yeah that's what I said, I used to lift for like a year so I'm not technically a noob, but I haven't lifted in two years, will I get noob gains again or nah?

I started lifting again in late dec after a 2 yrs hiatus and I still got the noob gains the only difference is I know what Im doing this time and the gains are a lot faster than before

it is possible to build muscle and lose fat, it's just harder to accomplish because you have to be very careful with your macros, high protein, low fat, and some carbs

You have more muscle than you think under all that fat. Your body needs it to carry all that fat around.

When you lose weight, it's both fat and muscle. Your body thinks it doesn't need it anymore.

Lifting tells your body to not do that.

IOW, you're not going to build muscle, you're just trying to preserve what you've already got so that you at least have SOMETHING to show besides loose skin when you're done.

But in a similar situation. I too am a bit chubby but I'm what you call skinny fat. Fat in the belly but thin in the arms and legs. Should I take protein powder and run/weight lift or should I NOT take the protein and just excerice?

being on a deficit doesn't mean you can't gain muscle at all.

eating on a deficit, lost 4kg of fat and gained 2,3kg of lean mass, went from 19% bf to 13,6%

btw it's in portuguese so Massa Gorda = fat and Massa Magra = lean mass

you can gain muscle and lose fat at the same time, you just wont gain all that much muscle because you're on a deficit, and obviously there are limits to how much you can gain within a certain calorie intake and macronutrient ratio.

honestly I just went to a professional because fuck figuring this shit out by myself, I'll just stick to her diet and keep lifting. And it's working out well so far.
