ITT: injuries

How the fuck is it possible that a fitness board doesnt have a thread dedicated to injuries?

I fucked up my acl and meniscus recently and will most likely have to go to surgery. A knee specialist examined me and according to him I have a textbook case of acl/meniscus partial tear. I will be doing further scans and xrays in a few months when I finish with my uni exams. Now in the meantime, since I cant squat or play any sports, I was wondering if doing light cardio like jumprope could fuck my shit up even further before the operation. I do feel slight uneasiness in the knee while and after moving and I dont want to aggravate the injury further.

Anyone else had experience with acl/meniscus tears? Will waiting to have it fixed make it worse? How did your rehab go and did you have any recurring problems related to it? Same questions apply to all the other injuryfags who post in this thread.

>How the fuck is it possible that a fitness board doesnt have a thread dedicated to injuries?
because this board is populated primarily by 19-21 year old college kids who know absolutely fuck all about this topic

I'm certainly not a PT or doctor, but I'd suggest nothing strenuous, including light cardio, for risk of aggravating or worsening the injury. Seriously OP, don't fuck around with it

Only weaklings get injured

don't do anything involving your knee dude.

>smash knee in rugby game 5 years ago
>starts swelling and shit but I wanted to keep playing
>get occasional pain but who gives a fuck
>fast forward 5 years
>squatting 135 kg
>running 3 times a week
>diddly lifting 130 kg (yeah I know)
>go to stand up one day
>crunch
>knee has completely given out
>keeps happening
>getting worse and more frequent; stops being a once a week following exercise thing to 6 times a day sort of thing
>go to gp
>get mri and go to surgeon
>developed something called plica syndrome and all of my subsequent exercise and aggravation had destroyed parts of my meniscus, trochlear groove, chondral flap and something else
>recovery time doubles and I'm now marked as having had meniscus surgery

dude just leave it and get it sorted

Well I figured that most of Veeky Forums used to play sports and that at least a few people here actually lift, so its probable that they've seen their fair share of injuries. Hey at least it not another "ples gib routine" thread.

I know man but I'm going crazy, I gained a fair amount of pounds since the injury and I want to start fighting that shit.

I know, thats what I get for playing soccer while being 6'5''.

I've messed up my knee somehow and don't know what to do. I don't even have a GP doctor much less any idea how much it would cost. Any burgers have a guess what that would be? I have pretty good insurance.

Well your response has enough Latin sounding words to convince me out of straining the knee further. I guess every day is upper body day from now on.

How did your rehab go? How long until you were cleared to start squatting again? Have you played any contact sports afterwards? I know my experience probably wont be the same but I'm still curious.

Day 4. Doctor said it was a severe sprain, but I'm in just as much pain now as the night it happened. Going to the doctor tomorrow, I'm super nervous. Anyone experience a severely sprained/broken ankle?

>Well I figured that most of Veeky Forums used to play sports
kek most posters are obese man children with an opinion on everything.

Currently doing physical therapy for a tear in my groin of the aponeurosis, from playing soccer, muscle imbalances, and inflexibility. Shit has kept me out for almost a year. It took a while to get out diagnosed. I had started coming back late spring but I re injured myself early in the summer.

Sprains can take like the best part of 2 weeks to heal. If you tore or ripped a ligament you're looking at months instead. I'd wait a bit longer before going back, keep it iced and up and weight free as much as possible for another few days then go if no improvement.

Had bad sprain recently, yours looks a little worse, but even mine didn't show that much improvement by then.

I have a torn acl and meniscus. I'm able to full squat, leg extensions, all that, but I don't do heavy weights and I def don't play sports. Doc said I can move my knee fine just cutting quickly isn't going to happen.

sprains and strains always hurt worse before they get better. RICE until you're told not to then hot compress and pain killers. stay off it and don't be a retard.

however i suggest getting used to wearing ankle supported shoes because once you suffer an ankle injury that entire structure is compromised basically forever and you are prone to them for the rest of your life. youll probably roll your ankle a lot if you havent been a serial ankle roller already

thanks man, that's comforting to hear.

Finally getting my shoulder an mri scan after years of waiting. Hopefully it'll lead to a proper diagnosis and get it fixed

i've never had anything remotely this bad, but that's sort a bummer i guess. i just want the swelling to go down so i can actually wear shoes again and not a giant slipper

I had chronic problems in my knees and I fixed them by taking "Cissus Quadrangularis".

I shit you not, I've read studies and decided to try it in a combination with eating at least 10g of gelatine a day, because nothing else helped and I didn't want to get surgery and after a month I could do Squats again.

I know it sounds like "DOCTORS HATE HIM" but it did wonders for me.

Here's one study:
ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24113700

rehab was alright. i began a week to the day following the surgery and did it for about 3 months. i started bodyweight squatting with no bar or anything just to clarify about 2 months following the operation and did that for a bit and about 4 months after the operation i began squatting with a bar and weight again.

the trouble with it all was outlined by my surgeon and it's this: the talk you'll get about recovery time is recovery time to activites the regular person considers normal. that is, walking without a limp, jumping, jogging etc. it's not HIIT stair runs, it's not 135 kg squats etc so you can't run off the same timeline. you'll have a more extensive recovery period than mine was so i'm not quite sure how long it will be for you in that regard. i haven't played contact sport since but that's for other reasons. i could easily be cleared to play now if i wanted. i reckon i could have been cleared from about 6 months post op.

one important thing to note is that even when your knee becomes physically sound again, you lose all proprioception of it following a knee op. you will have absolutely no idea where it is in relation to your body for 6 to 18 months. that made squatting a lot harder because i had no fucking clue where my knee was tracking. just take your physio seriously, apply your gym dedication to that and you'll be back quickly. i went hard out with my rehab, rehabbed daily and did every exercise over and over and the surgeon was saying i was within a top percentage of post ops recovering at the 2 week review. if you sit around doing fuck all, resting your leg for months then recovery will be very slow.

but look overall it was worth it. it was about 14 months ago now and i'm back squatting 130 kg (including a 3 month period at the start of the year where i didn't even have a gym membership and lost like 8 kg). my knee was fucked and there was either get it operated on or have a lifetime of what is essentially a very unstable knee.

you guys know the whole sternum/cartilage stretching thing people get from dips? well i got that x20 and lasted a long time, went to docs and they said its a grade 2 muscle strain, no chest work for 1-3 months. It hurts to breathe senpai lol. Any contraction of the chest and huge pain.

Also tore my rotatorcuff (NOT FROM LIFTING) but from fucking sleeping. Yep sleeping in a certain position and woke up one morning, knew instantly went to docs and they confirmed it.

My shit tier delts and chest (because of previous shoulder injuries, impingement and winged scapula) are going to dissapear over these next 3 months kill me

to reduce swelling, properly follow RICE

Rest
Ice
Compression
Elevation

this isn't what you should be doing forever because it actually prolongs healing. once the swelling goes down you should apply a hot compress, this stimulates tissue growth and opens blood vessels to expedite the healing process

my doc said not to do this for EVERYTHING for example, it can harm elbow tendonitis by interferring with natural healing processes and also nerve stuff

Does anyone else have experiences with this?

>playing soccer while being 6'5''
Seems awkward. You should play basketball instead.

right. its only for certain injuries like sprains and strains.

tendinitis is inflammation of the tendon. so heating it only aggravates it.

source: athletic training major (although only for 1 year). the crazy thing about athletic trainers is that they make athletes recover from injuries faster than normies. they are basically better in all ways than PT's. in fact, if you have access to a team house on a college campus, go there for sport related injury. they might even treat you for free. if anything you can get a free ankle wrapping from one of the freshmen

I fucked up my ribs during BJJ.

It hurts when I cough.

I think sex might be painful too.

I hope this heals soon.

tfw my college has completely shit fitness and sports stuff

I'm rehabbing a muscle strain grade 2 right at my sternum insertions and its complete hell. Been icing like 10 times a day and 2-4 advils, just waiting for this to be over.

core injuries suck my man. i had a hernia like 8 years ago and i couldnt move for the first week without some kind of pain.

but remember not to over ice. as i said in an earlier post its just supposed to reduce swelling and numb the pain. over icing drags out the healing process because it slows down cellular metabolism. AKA you are putting your injury in the freezer to prevent it from spoiling (healing).

youll be okay. once you start applying heat try to move but dont over exert and definitely dont introduce weight. only your body movements. once you start getting more and more comfortable id suggest buying a weight band and wrapping it around your back and simulate a chest exercise that way. should help you determine where your injury is at. but dont start too heavy.

I understand, but would you rather take time to let it heal and have a chance at returning to a normal, pre injury routine, or let your ego get the best of you and fuck it up again.

You can always lose that weight after you've recovered.

Shout out to all the MCL bros.

Had an off day earlier in the year practicing squat cleans. During the session I felt a slight throb in my right knee which I thought would clear up with a few more reps. NOPE. After two more and noticeably more pain, I immediately stopped and visited the doctor. Turns out I had a grade 1 MCL tear which was verging on Grade 2. He said thank god I stopped and decided not push through it.

Thankfully Grade 1/2 tears usually don't require surgery. After 3 weeks of rest, I started lifting again - upper body only with very conservative weight. I came back for a follow up around the 8 week mark and my knee was cleared.

I guess my take away was listen to your body as soon as something doesn't feel "right". It's cliche as fuck but way better to be safe than sorry.

Oh for sure. Anything where it hurts to move sucks ass lol. I'll try heating it soon. It was getting a lot better for 3 weeks (no longer hurt to breathe/move) then I sneezed and I could feel everything tearing up again and felt like I was bleeding. Knew instantly all my progress was gone.

Yea, any type of contraction/squeezing hurts a shit ton, even doing a bench press motion with no weight makes it flare up like crazy.

How long should I apply heat for and how often? I've never used heat before to heal injuries/

Wear tight knee sleeves like sbd, or yellowjackets. Indestructible knees.

Do banded rotator cuff isometric holds, doorway pec stretches, equivalent pulling and pushing volume and correct scapular retraction in the bench. Indestructible shoulders.

Hammer curls, indestructible elbows

Belt, weighted ab wheel and back extensions. no hernias and safer spine

hammer curls can fuck up ur elbow/bicep tendon if u go super heavy and push urself tho

Sucks to hear about your knee. Hope you like PTOA fampai. Did they do surgery on it?

I started punching someone in their fucking head and I guess the curved surface caused my hand to slip... bruised or fractured the inside of my pinkie bone or something. has been hurting for four days now. A little restricted movement but only because of pain. Problem is thou the area feels slightly cold at times. I think the swelling is causing some sort of nerve compression. I know my nerves have been compromised somehow but i dont know if its permanent. Again 4 days. When you friend starts asking about cocaine and you're too drunk, its time to go your separate ways.

Veeky Forums is about building bodies, not breaking them.

What the hell? You should sue that guy tbqh

No I was completely the initiator of physical attack, unfortunately this makes me the bad guy. I might do a restraining order against him because he fucking needs to stay away from me.

>tfw tore labrum
>tfw the injury that caused the tear, caused the labrum to tear in a different place than it should have and the ortho was confused

I can still OHP and do dips just fine, just have to bench with a reverse grip.

What kills me is that I cant sleep on that arm, which I have done pretty much every night since I was a toddler, and the seemingly random aching pains here and there.

I just have to make sure that my rear delts and back are well developed from what I understand.

How do i confirm if my meniscus is torn.
>knee's been sore for about 2 weeks now.
I just thought it was nothing and would heal quickly, but its not going away and if anything getting worse.

I did move 6tons of hay by hand the other day, but it was sore before that.
Dont know how i injured it but rough sex is likely....

Sooooo, how do i confirm. How do i treat (preferably without surgery)

>Start attacking your druggie friend while you're drunk
>Hurt your finger in the process
>File a restraining order against him

Have your tries seeing a professional instead of asking autists on a Cambodian Elephant farming forum?

so u have a boxers fracture.
>go get a cast.

Swimming is god tier cardio for your situation

I did my acl playing austealian football and had to have a reco, yoshould be fine on elliptical / bike for cardio, but i woukd entirely avoid treadmill, free running or weights until after your surgery. Especially with a meniscus injury piahing yourself too early will only make it worse in the long run. Get your surgery and make sure to do your rehab after!

Sternum popping sucks. Got it when I finally hit Lmao3plaet. Door stretches and taking a broom handle with snatch grip and stretching shoulder rom really helped recovery

yea... a medical professional seems like the best option at this point. i tried icing it for like 3 hrs, it got numb and their was no pain, but then i stood up... now i am sure i will need surgery.

I googled my knee pain earlier and thats why i think its the meniscus. its in the exact sport, plus the internet says u can tear it and not feel it until the next day which is basically what happened to me. I also didnt see any non surgery options on google, i was just hoping some chiropractor wanna Veeky Forumsbitch would know of how to fix it without surgery. for the first week the knee felt like if i popped the knee it would be all right but it just got worse and worse.

>So yea doctor.... faaaaaaaaaaaaak
on an unrelated note, is surgery expensive if u got that obama-cares?

I was squatting and i've been going pretty deep past parallel, and after a workout one day i came away from it with a dull pain/soreness in the tendons on the top left and right of my groin where it meets my legs. Nothing has snapped and there is no major pain, but i am not messing with weights until the pain goes away and don't want to injure myself.

Am i going too deep on squats?

Squatting too heavy too quickly?

Been thinking of trying cissus or getting on some supps for joint health and longevity. I started bjj last month and have been getting some joint pain. Also im getting into my late 20s so i guess im an old man now.

How do you know it isnt the gelatin thats making it better? Other advice for lifting and being fit into longevity?

Hurt my left shoulder during OHPs. Have a history of injury with this ('popped' out during bench when I was dyel 6 years ago). Currently taking ibuprofen. Think it might be my rotator cuff.

What do Veeky Forums? Does anyone know any rotator cuff/scapula rehab exercises that work? I will kms before I lose my delt/tri gains

Stay away from jump rope for sure... do biking. Biking is fantastic.

my left knee is pretty bad, I think it cracks a lot when I move it and bend it. Also My butt muscle I guess hurts after running for a long time and my upper thigh bone hurts too. All of this only affects my left leg. Anyone know whats wrong with me? Tried googling it but not sure where exactly my pain is at.

> /injury/ thread
>click control f

Holy shit. Like I knew Knee injuries were common as fuck, but 90% of the injuries in this thread are knee injuries. Wtf bros. Vastus medials and hamstring strengthening. Quad:hamstring balance, warm up, flexibility, proprioception and balance. I mean wtf. How the fuck can you tear your MCL squatting? (that was one of the injuries I read here) - you have to be a fucking retard to do that.

Guys - knee injuries are seriously preventable. Like...nearly 100% preventable.

recovering from tendinosis here, is it okay to go on a 500 kcal deficit or will that slow down my healing?

i've looked everywhere for this and i cant figure it out

...

> Right knee clicks repeatedly whenever I squat without or with heavy weight
> Doesn't hurt or wear out quicker then my other perfectly good left knee
> Piss scared it will get me banned from being a Navyfag.

What do?

>he doesn't have bad knees

>Playing bball
>Fast break layup
>New guy tryhards to run me down from behind
>He autist-mode leaps into my back and elbows my face
>He lands under me and I plant on his foot
>Rolled ankle + ACL MCL tear
Totally preventable

What's up with you guys and knees?
Lower back snap city here.

I have a worn out knee meniscus, it will never heal back completely, can hurt a lot sometimes, while I'm swimming and taking glucosamine with chondroitine its under control.

partial acl tear playing rugby about 6 years ago. didnt get it operated on, rehabed for a few months with physio and started playing again... somehow managed 3 seasons before a complete tear and a large bucket handle meniscus tear.

ended up getting an ACL reconstruction from a hamstring graft and had 75% of the meniscus on the inside (right side of left knee if that makes sense) of my knee removed. Also had a macinstosh procedure to place a ligament on the outside of my knee to reinforce and prevent twisting.

2 Operations, 1 to remove and 1 to rebuild. Lots of physio and after about a year i was able to get back to rugby training. Season was more or less over though so I gave myself the time off to hit the gym and be 100% sure, played the last game of last season, was supposed to play 40 minutes but played the full 80 and the knee was the only part of me that didnt hurt desu lol. About to start the new season in a few weeks and knee has felt mostly fine. A little stiff in the mornings sometimes but for now it's pretty good. Will no doubt have arthritis later in life though due to meniscus removal.

Get the surgery, listen to the physios and do the exercises. When you feel ready to go check your ego at the door and give it another few months of hard work (i felt ready about 8-9 months after but didnt play till 12 on the advice of my physio)

I hurt my right shoulder on bench going below parallel because I was DYELfag for months and only started researching correct form recently. How would I know if it was a rotator cuff injury? I still have full range of motion and it is more of a dull ache.

I had a pretty bad meniscus tear, seems like there are some questions about that so my experience was this:

Running interval sprints, afterwards, knee felt weird sore. Didn't notice anything at the time of injury. Next day knee was swollen and hard to bend.

Swelling goes down, try to go back to normal work. I'm a BJJ fag, first class back I try to sit on my knees and back on my heels, knee clicks when I bend past a certain point, then makes an unholy loud pop when I try to re-extend

>uh oh

Same thing happens if I squat, feels like my knee is going to explode on the way back up.

Go to Doc, Doc says probably meniscus, orders MRI, sends me to specialist.
Specialist diagnosis a fairly bad meniscus tear. Have scope surgery, most damage is caused by the fluid they inflate your knee with. Hurt kind of bad, very stiff after, but that went away pretty quickly.

Waited the recommended 6 weeks, back to training normally as if nothing happened.

Knee makes a little more noise than it did prior to injury, and I don't have all my flexibility back, but I don't feel limited at all.
