Everyone on this board thinks they're immune to everything because they're in their 20s, lift weights a few times a week, and occassionally eat vegetables. Chances are you'll die of cancer or heart disease or something similar later in your life, and horrible accidents can happen no matter how safe you try to be.

do you even know any old people ? Every old person I know takes 10+ pills with every meal and has multiple doctor appointments a month, and these aren't obese people.

Insurance should be completely divorced from your workplace, the reason is - no one stays at the same workplace for long now and as you age you get more & more conditions which the insurance companies will list as pre-existing if you change insurers.

As it stands with the ACA now, you can't be kicked off your insurance and you can't be denied new insurance for pre-existing conditions. Insurers hate this, because they basically would just like to insure healthy people who don't really need it so they profit more.

-they employee has to pay a larger share than the employer
-it has an upper cap on maximum payments that corresponds roughly to the income of the upper middle class (meaning you'll pay the same whether you earn 80K or 5 million a year)
-it receives no tax subsidies by the government

but what you now have done, is increase the profit of the service providers even more. now people that previously couldn't afford services, receive them, paid for by everyone, while the service providers still charge the same.

The problem is insurance companies IMO.

The idea of insurance companies is great, but the practice is not as effective. When your insurance covers your medical bills you dont particularly care what the bill actually says. However, when you're paying out of pocket and realize that they charged you to hold your newborn baby is when it actually hits home.

I believe health saving accounts are the best bet for this reason. You can argue the bill when they charge you for stupid shit. Insurance companies dont care and the government won't either.

Atm I don't think he's looking into single payer, but rather to eliminate the state line restrictions placed on insurance companies that prevent competitive rates from coming into place as well as getting rid of the mandatory minimum coverage rules. He may revisit some aspects of single payer policy once the current regulatory issues get worked out, but right now he's focused on the reduction of cost of in the privatized system since that drives up prices overall

The point isn't that you get a return on every penny spent, the point is that you don't risk personal bankruptcy the day something does happen to you.
