My recipe is 1 heaping tablespoon of brown sugar and a teaspoon of ground cinnamon per cup of steel cut oats. Probably too much sugar, but I don't give a shit, it's delicious.

literally just add pinches of sugar until it has a good taste (no it doesn't have to taste like frosted flakes just add sugar until it doesn't taste like cardboard anymore) i normally add 3 pinches of salt which is about a teaspoon and a half

There's tons of things you can do with oats
Buy old fashioned though, steel cut is fucking stupid and you won't absorb half the nutrients in them unless you cook then properly i.e. not in the microwave
Here's a good one:
Oats
SnP
Cinnamon
Allspice
1/4 tsp vanilla
Cut banana
Water
Microwave for 3 minutes on 6 power, the oats should by a bit thick and the bananas kind of "baked"
Stir in plain 0% Greek yogurt and optionally protein powder (if you do, skip the 1/4 tsp vanilla)
This is a variation on a popular Japanese breakfast:
Oats
Garlic powder
Parsley flakes
Water
Microwave on 7 power for 5 minutes. The oats should come out still moist but very thick, you want them to be pretty hot
As soon as you take em out of the microwave, crack an egg on it and stir it up really well, you want the residual heat to cook the egg.
Throw in some spinach
Add a few dashes of soy sauce, rice vinegar, and sriracha

I had oatmeal for breakfast, I topped it with cranberry sauce. I've used applesauce, I've used sugar and cinnamon. I might try bananas, peanut butter, and chocolate syrup.
The important thing is to keep the topping on top, not mix it in.
Don't assume it needs to be sweet. Google savoury oats.
