being a defenseman in lacrosse was perfectly fine I had to keep up with offensemen, have not just hand eye coordination but hand stick coordination which is sortof abstract, I had to have precise control over my movements as a properly placed poke check could be a game winning maneuver, the ability to change direction quickly and not get juked by an offenseman is v important

Muh less target area. Reach is important but there are ways to get around it, whether it be through priority in Foil and Sabre or the fact that the arm/wrist is the more common target in epee and that it's a similar distance from both fencers, unlike the torso.
