How does /fit feel about martial arts

Ive never taken a martial arts class and was always dis encouraged from doing so when i was a kid, so through my teen life i never did much research on it. What i want to know is A.) is it worth my time to try to learn one and B.) if so what type.

A.Yes

B. Boxing

Not that boxing is the best, but it requires a high level of focus and fitness, there is boxing gyms literally everywhere, and the training is extremely functional. It's very hard to go wrong with a boxing gym.

As a general rule though, if the martial art involves real sparring against a resistant opponent then it will benefit you, if it involves poses and moves against an opponent that doesn't resist then it has no value in real life.

Other striking options are kickboxing and muay thai, for grappling Brazilian jiu jitsu or wrestling.

...

If you wanna be able to defend yourself, yes.

Seconded, my generalisation of generalisations is:
Boxing = Defensive striking (counter punching, slipping and head movement)
MT and kickboxing = Offensive striking
Wrestling = Defensive grappling (defending against the takedown, pinning opponents)
BJJ = Offensive grappling (choking dudes out)

despite what every autist will tell you here, conceal carry, pipebomb,"i'm too civilized to fight therefore no one will attack me", yes, any legit martial art (any full contact karate, , muay thai, boxing, judo, ju jitsu, greco-roman wrestling, sambo, etc.) will not only benefit you from a defense point of view, but will improve your health and physical condition.

There is absolutely no downside for practicing a legit martial art as an amateur. And don't start with "a real fight", none of you faggots are street fighters. Anyone who has ever trained and knows how to take a hit and throw a kick or a punch is better in a street fight than someone who doesn't.

But you don't do it for street fights or bar fights. You do it cause it's a fun activity with multiple benefits.

If you want to defend yourself get a CCW or get good at 400m repeats.

most street fights from what I have seen end with one guy's friends jumping in and kicking the other guy while he wears limp on the floor or just stabbing the other guy a dozen times and running away.

They are fun sports, but I wouldn't pull guard in a bar fight or whatever. Maybe weapon based martial arts are different. I learned some baton and knife fighting stuff in the military that seemed they would be effective against one, maybe two at the most people.

I am self practiced in the arts of the blade.
I could literally destroy any person on Veeky Forums in a match.

Your arrogance will be your downfall.

Judo if a good club is available. You'll learn how to grapple while staying mobile and aware of your surroundings. When you do go to the ground, Judo groundwork focuses on top pressure and finishing the fight directly or recognizing when it's time to get back up. BJJ is basically the same thing but focused on aspects that are more important in sport fighting than actual combat. I don't expect to ever be in combat, but I also don't plan to enter an MMA match so judo feels the most "useful" and fun to me. Judo is also the most lifting-compatible martial art.

this is true, judo and weightlifting go very well with each other.

Can anybody give me a decent review of gracie jiu jitsu/gracie combatives?

I know bjj gets a lot of love in general on here, but nobody mentions gjj.

Ah yes, Veeky Forums approved being shorthand for newfag redditor japery.

Also reminder that Kyokushin Karate is Fujian White Crane with Grolious Japanese words for everything.

GJJ has more drills and less contact time in the first 6 or so months iirc. Typically BJJ is more MMA oriented, often the gym will also do Muay Thai and run MMA style sparring sessions. GJJ is straight BJJ p much, so far more focused on rolling and not using force. They're more similar after the initial few months tho.

I'm p sure there's a GJJ site that explains a lot of this tho.

only martial art i enjoy is HEMA, Italy has a fuckhuge HEMA community so it's easy to find a school for it here

I looked at the gjj site, and it was a lot of claiming that bjj is a sport and not useful in real life, and that gjj is superior because it's actual self defense techniques.

Seemed like a lot of self promotion, which is somewhat understandable, but krav maga makes exactly the same claims and that is generally thought of as mcdojo territory unless you are actually taught by military professionals.

Hard to know what to believe sometimes, every website of every gym/dojo claims they are the best, and other martial arts aren't effective, so I thought I'd ask here to see if anybody has actual experience with them.

Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is just advertising. They have a big name, so they try and say (without actually saying it outright) that if you don't train with them you are a pleb.

Another BJJ gym that does this is 10th planet (strictly no-gi bjj).

Pick a gym that vibes with you. Go to a couple of classes at each one to see what is best for you. BJJ gym vibe is everything.

>Have been in tournaments with both Gracie-(insert school here) and 10thplanet guys. Its just rolling with someone from a different school.

>karate
>not useful in a real fight
it's always so cute when casuals pretend to know anything about fighting

A) If you do martial arts to be able to "defend yourself" or win street fights, you're either autist or a little kid with power fantasies.

B) If you want to take punches to your head, you're not very smart person, like this guyC) If you try to argue which martial art is the best, you're an idiot. It should be a sport, and you go witht he rules your sport has. Its like arguing about if football is better than basketball. Different rules, different athletes.

Unless you want to fight in UFC or something like that

Get a gun.

>it was a lot of claiming that bjj is a sport and not useful in real life

That's pretty true. If you're on the ground with one opponent then it's useful. But in a real life situation chances are he's got some buddies with him and could go apeshit on you while you're grappling on the ground.

If he's got buddies you are probably fucked no matter what martial art you train in.

In your opinion, what martial art do you think is best, as in most fun, has highest level of strength and conditioning to maximise fitness or whatever.

I know you said you can't compare 2 different sports, but I believe you can, you can have preferences and you can state the advantages and disadvantages of your thinking.

Boxing sparring doesn't need to involve full contact.

Was about to say just this
Look at the UFC/Vale Tudo. If its used there, it works.
The multiple-attacker scenario is a shitty one to be in, even if you have a weapon. It is also a scenario that can be further exaggerated to make almost anything ineffective:

>One attacker
bjj
>Six attackers
9mm
>17 attackers
AR-15
>37 attackers
etc, etc.

Not even a nuke can take out a billion attackers. Just pick an (effective) martial art and have fun FFS. In a 1on1 you'll be fetch, anything else is outside your control/stretching your ability.

Unless you are strong enough to knock opponents out with a single punch or kick, or able to snap an opponents limb within a couple of seconds then taking on multiple attackers is probably going to end very badly.

>You don't know my mentality, bro

Even if you have three friends and there are four opponents it's dangerous to be on the ground in that kind of chaos.

Saw this posted a few days ago, kind of relevant.

How do people fit martial arts training around their lifting routines?

Do you do MA on your rest days, or on the same days as your lifts?

Just to clarify this, actual sparring usually equates to sport.

So judo, wrestling, TKD, boxing etc all have specific rules and tournaments where somebody wins. People argue over whether this makes them better or worse irl. GJJ is less bullshit than most other non sparring non martial arts tho such as Krav Maga.

I agree with the guy thay says find something that vibes with you for what it's worth.

It's a bullshit chart unfortunately.

One must be very weak to not be able to knock out people by bare kicks or punches to the face.

This doesn't apply to iron chins tho

If you have a close to 100% punch to knockout ratio like you apparently believe you do, then I suggest you become a professional boxer.

In the real world, if you are faced with 2 or more opponents, and you can't guarantee that you can knock them out in one hit, then your best bet is to run.

Kicking in a street fight is a bad idea unless you're Lyoto Machida. Even professional fighters slip and fall.

Bjj and muay thai. Go for a year or two atleast, really worth it. Builds confidence, ability and youll make friends at the classes.

Is that dog holding the Atorios flipsword?

If someone is standing still and uprepared yes, if they are fighting back, no. People instinctively protect their head with movement, hands and tensing their neck muscles

wing-chun would be okay. Its what the air hostess for asian airlines use for beating the shit out of people that complain.

>as in most fun

Different people will like different things. What appeals to one may not appeal to another.

>has highest level of strength and conditioning to maximise fitness

YOU are responsible for the amount of effort you want to put into the training to maximise your own strength and fitness. The martial art itself is almost irrelevant in this case. Some people train as a hobby, some for 'self-defense, others to compete etc. The reasons are many. Ultimately if you want to improve your strength and fitness you would do just that by training more and challenging yourself. It's not up to the martial art to decide and if you truly think that way it is a sign of immaturity.

>Kicking in a street fight is a bad idea

Only really if you go for head shots or even body shots. Keep it to the legs and knees and it's pretty useful. Even a toe punt to the shins will stop a lot of attackers.

As if a person who would make that chart would even practice all of those arts.

Oh wise mage teach me your magic
