I resume counting on the last number I'm certain of, most failure during lifting are psychological in my case so it doesn't bother me

I did squats today and accidentally counted both down and up as 1 rep and got confused.

If i do that i start off at the lower number and risk doing an extra one.

Round down. e.g. if I'm doing a set of 8, and I genuinely don't remember if that was 7 or 8, I assume it was 7 and do one more rep.

FWIW, this has happened to me exactly one time.

Not lifting hard enough. Lifting til failure or just before is half of the driving factor behind linear progresssion. You should know what number you are on despite counting, just from difficulty.

Usually I generally do 15 reps for my workouts, so if I lose count I just start from 10 and do the last 5.

I only do 1 rep per set.
