A 30 day water fast is pretty extreme imho. Sure fasting is very benificial to the body, but stretching it out to a complete 30 days just doesnt make that much sense esp if done only for losing fat. a more suitable option is a muscle sparing modified fasting look it up buddy

Or you could just do a 16-17/8 fast like a normal human and eat good stuff.

The body stores fat to use as energy. The body uses glucose for energy instead of fat if it is available. Muscles are used for moving.

If there is no food, then your body will use up all your glycogen stores and then move onto fat. If the body burned muscle instead of fat, then we would have died a long time ago as that makes no sense. We need muscles to move.

It definitely can be done as long as you plan a head. Make sure you supplement with electrolytes so you don't die. And with any fast longer than 14 days refeeding syndrome becomes a possibility so start really slow when you begin eating again so you don't die.

By that same logic why even bother with water? Just do a dry fast since your amazing hunter body got all the reserves it need.

Fasts this long should only be done by people that have experience with lengthy fasts before.

The progression should be something like getting used to four days fasting, then eight, twelve, etc.

There's that story about the 90 year old man that fasted for forty days because he was a religious man and wanted to prove others that it wasn't fictitious, that people could actually do that that was in the Bible, and he succeeded at it which, according to him, improved his health.

It's shown as an example among many others in the book on fasting written by Upton Sinclair. He makes a very compelling argument in favour of this practice, though he advocates short fasts of four or eight days at most for the beginners.

Studies showed that untrained people lost 5% muscle mass in two weeks. Thats a lot, and that number could be higher for trained individuals.
Doing it for 4 weeks is not reccommended if your interested in muscle mass

well most people underestimate the muscle they have. say you are fat and you look like bearmode. do a fast and lose all that and you look like aushwitz. thats just because thats all the muscle you really had and your body fat was just covering it. dexa scans and shit show this

Which is why you dont fast. And have a deficit of 500kcals, so you maintain as much muscle as possible. Fasting/huge deficit is what anorexic people do. Which is why they lose most of their muscle mass.

what should I do to minimize strength loss during a week-long water fast? is it even possible to not lose any strength? are 2 or 3 sessions of some light singles during that time a good idea?

Doing good actually, it gets easier after 3 days because essentially fasting is like keto where your body needs to convert into burning ketones for fuel and thus people normally have a keto flu during those three days.

After that it's smooth sailing as hunger comes in waves and goes so I've gotten used to that. I am ending my fast next week though as I have a party to go to where my friend is buying me a buffet so I'm going to ease back into eating soon enough.

I've always struggle with cutting and fasting is essentially intermittent fasting and ketogenic diet taken to it's maximum.

I'll easily switch into IF and Keto to continue losing weight and maybe fasting for long periods of time to continue my weight loss. For the first time in my life I feel free enough to eat whatever I want without worrying about calories and to just fast in order to maintain my weight or lose it. It's pretty liberating.
